feels only fitting to start with Basalt as they were my first creation for Outer Wilds

since i enjoy speculating anatomy on the regular i decided to put together some images (feat, my shittily photobashed skull) and thoughts to try and figure out WHAT the Owlk are

The Owlks have very clear bunodont teeth, which are the teeth that critters like bears, humans and swines have. So your interpretation that they're omnivorous is very likely spot-on, OP!

Something else that I've been able to observe in-game is that their "thumbs" (mostly the one that substitutes the "pinky" finger) can and will happily shift its position to act more like a thumb or a finger at will. Similarly, irl owls are able to twist one of their talons so that it can be in both a zygodactyl and anisodactyl form, and grip better on prey and tree branches! (Observation featuring my crappy in game screenshot) So again, a very very spot-on theory

To this day, I still don't know if those things they have on their heads are horns or antlers. I'd personally lean more towards antlers, considering that horns have a bone base and a keratinous shell, while antlers are fully bone. Rosettas are barely visible on the antlerless model, so maybe that's something that would be able to help? Additionally You-Know-Who's broken antler proves that they're not hollow inside, so maybe they're actually antlers? Who knows! They could very much be a secret third thing

I hella agree that they're mammalian, though! The mummy models show that they have a very visible navel (even if a navel isn't a solely mammalian characteristic, considering that animals that develop in an egg have a yolk sac, but one so visible might indicate a mammalian umbilical cord)!

They also have a six pack and incredibly weirdly shaped ribcages and pelvis, but we don't talk about that
