Jacksons turn - January 2019

So of course I wanted to do this on his birthday. But now its 6 months after his birthday so we are just going to celebrate 5.5 instead. He is still obsessed with dinosaurs but has a couple of new obsessions as well – Star Wars and Godzilla. He is already so excited for the new Godzilla movie that is coming out in May. He just barely made the cutoff to head to Kindergarten this year, but we decided to wait a year.

His memory is incredible. He can legitimately beat me at the memory card game. He remembers every toy he’s ever gotten and where he got it. He remembers movies and where and when he watched them. He loves going to movies especially any about dinosaurs. Favorite shows include Mickey and the Roadster Racers, Blaze and the Monster Machines, Rusty Rivets, Butterbeans Café, Zootopia, and many others.

In July we found out Jackson needed glasses. They did a screening at school and recommended we follow up with an eye doctor. Sure enough his vision is pretty bad (both nearsighted and farsighted). I felt so terrible we didn’t notice sooner. He has been doing so good with his glasses. Now I can’t picture him without them. This definitely contributed to the fact that he didn’t really like to draw/color. He couldn’t see the paper! The first time he really wore the glasses he walked around the back yard looking at things. Like – oh there are individual blades of grass.

STATS

Weight: not even sure. I should probably weigh him sometime.

Height: no idea. I know when we went to Disney World in June of 2017 he was 40” because you had to be 40” to ride a bunch of rides. He just barely made it then.

Head: still huge

Eating: Looks like he is going to be our pickiest eater. He is basically a vegetarian (at least at home). He loves bacon though. His favorite foods include pizza, French fries, apples, popcorn and yogurt. I sound like mother of the year over here. He really enjoys going to Corner Café and getting waffles and bacon. And a big cinnamon roll of course.

Sleeping: He’s had his big boy bed for a few years now and does pretty good. He does wake up most nights but will make his way downstairs to us. He kicks and squirms in his sleep more than I thought was possible.

Clothing: 5T is getting pretty small on him. Anything new I buy is the boys section now. No more cute toddler section.

Diapers: Potty trained at 3. I should probably take this off now.

Playing: He loves to play outside. No matter the weather he would want to be outside. He will go on long hikes with us and dig in the dirt. He also really loves going to the park, zoo, science city, and Lego Land. Legos are definitely one of his favorite toys.

Him and Scarlett play so well together. They will fight occasionally but most of the time they play really well. I love to watch them talk and giggle together. So adorable.

Teeth – still has all baby teeth. Expecting to maybe lose his first in the next year or so.

Talking: I feel like I need to change some of these categories. He is at the point now where it is like having a conversation with an adult. His vocabulary is incredible. This age is really fun.

Potty Training: Done at 3. Definitely deleting this category.

Other developments: We went as a family up to Omaha for a weekend to visit friends. This is the first time the 4 of us have gone overnight somewhere (other than grandparents house and family vacations to the beach). They both did great and I’m really looking forward to more fun family memories.

Better late than never right. Scarlett has had so many changes over the past year. She is now potty trained (although she still struggles with holding it at night). She has a big girl bed and sleeps through the night. She loves it when I sleep up there with her. She really likes baby dolls and playing store/kitchen. She now has both a bitty baby and a Wellie Wisher and many other baby dolls.

I can tell she has a math mind. She is analytical and you can sometimes see the wheels turning as she is thinking about something. She has such a great sense of humor and is constantly making us laugh. She is the best pretend robot “I am a robot poop!”

STATS

Weight: not even sure. I should probably weigh her sometime.

Height: I need to do this too. We are heading to Disney in June and need to make sure she meets some of those height requirements. She seems like she is one of the taller ones in the family so it should be okay

Head: not as big as Jackson’s but still big

Eating: She is more adventurous than Jackson. But boy is she stubborn. She will not try anything unless it is her idea. She will eat a lot of the same things that Chris and I eat though. I’ve seen her try chili (she loved it), egg burritos, all types of meat, and all sorts of dips. She LOVES to dip her food. Ketchup, BBQ sauce, honey, etc. She loves it. Favorite foods include strawberries, chicken nuggets, cauliflower (WHAT?!), and pancakes.

Sleeping: We moved her to her big girl bed right around 3. She is doing great in it although she still likes for me to lay next to her while she goes to sleep.

Clothing: 3T is getting small. I buy 4T for her now. She always wants to dress herself and denies me most of the time when I try to pick for her.

Diapers: Similar to Jackson potty trained at 3. I should probably take this off now. She does still struggle at night though. She is such a sound sleeper though. I think her little body just doesn’t wake up enough to tell her to get up and go.

Playing: She loves playing make believe. Her favorite game is “baby house”. Basically she just decides what she wants to be (i.e. baby bear, baby elephant, baby Godzilla etc) and you are the mom xyz and she just orders you around. Mommy Godzilla snuggle me. Now pick me up and take me to the cave. She also loves making food in her pretend kitchen and store. This past Christmas was an American Girl Christmas. She got her Wellie Wisher doll. She loves playing with her dolls and is often very content playing by herself.

She also loves to be outside, but is not nearly as comfortable with crazy temperatures like Jackson. The house two down from us started this fall and they both love going to play on the hill. She plays a lot with her cousins, like Jackson, and also really likes playing with some of the neighborhood kids (Cal, Finley, Kelly Anne, Tommy, and Alena). Her best friend at school is Maggie.

Teeth – all teeth are in. I think. Second child.

Talking: She is so verbal. Strangers and acquaintances have even mentioned it. She is around lots of older kids (cousins) so I think she picks up on all of what they say. I try to write down in a book all the funny things they say but I know I am missing some. She is so much fun to talk to.

We started gymnastics this past year and she loves it. She is super competitive and does not like to lose. They do a “race” most days at gymnastics which is just a single lap around the gym. She wins every time, except for one time when another kid in her class’s older sibling decided to run with them. He was probably 6 or 7 and won by a mile. She sat down on the floor after he passed her and refused to continue. Scream crying. Definitely doesn’t like to lose.
