Itsukushima shrine, Miyajima Itsukushima shrine is known worldwide for its famous āfloatingā torii gate which is set out in the Seto Inland Sea. The shrine and torii are unique for being built over water, seemingly floating in the sea during high tide. During low tide, you can walk to the foot of Otorii. Otorii is the boundary between the spirit and the human world. The vermilion color of the shrine and the torii is considered to keep evil spirits away. The first Otorii was constructed in 1168 and it was built about 200 meters offshore. There is also a legend about origin of the torii: When the Goddess Amaterasu hid herself in the heavenly cave (you can read about it in Kojiki, the oldest chronicle of Japan), the world was shrouded in darkness. The other spirits arranged for the āeternal long crowing birdsā (cockerels) to roost and crow, and then Amaterasu came out of the cave and the world regained the light. Since then people made roosts for cockerels in front of shrines and that may have been the origin of the torii. If you would like to take beautiful photo of the torii gate, the best time is when Otorii stands out against the golden sky of sunset.
