Dover Castle has seen its fair share of battles throughout its time. Over the centuries, as the technology of warfare changed, the Castle continued to evolve. Around 1750, ramparts for cannons were built onto the walls. During the Napoleonic era, when there was a real threat of invasion, British forces dug tunnels under the Castle to house troops. Subsequently, the military enhanced its defenses, and additional buildings were constructed later. The Castle remained a necessary military installation until 1958. It's impressive to see how time overlapped with its display of catapults from the 13th century and its air defenses in the 20th century. On the eastern outer wall lies a 40mm Bofors anti-aircraft gun from world war 2.
