During my visit to Dover Castle, I captured many images of the castle, at least the parts that were open to the public. There is much to cover, so hopefully, I can share some images focusing on specific areas every week. Today's post is on St Mary in Castro. This Saxon church was built on Castle Hill in the 10th century. As it stands today, the church of St Mary is a much-restored example of a Saxon church dating from around 1000 AD. It is surrounded by a large late Saxon cemetery which implies that this church supersedes an earlier structure. In 597, St Augustine was sent by Pope Gregory I to England to convert the Saxons into Christianity. Augustine landed in eastern Kent and managed to convert Etherburt, who gave him land in Canterbury. Etherburt made Kent the dominant force in England during his reign; however, his son's ascension to the throne was viewed as a setback since he did not convert to Christianity for as many as eight years after becoming king. When he converted, the church insisted that he separate from his first wife, his stepmother. In 1000 AD, the church was reconstructed next to a Roman lighthouse that was later converted to a bell tower. . . #sonya7riv #2470gmaster #uk_shooters #littlepiecesofbritain #map_of_europe #ukmyworld #europestyle_uk #worldcaptures #shooters #capturingbritain #eclectic_shotz #moodygrams #stayandwander #YourBritain #bestcastles #britishcastles #StMaryinCastro #saxonchurch #britisharchitecture #kentengland #dover #whitecliffsofdover #kentcoast #englishhistory #englishchannel (at Dover Castle England U.K) https://www.instagram.com/p/CN1uBf1MDt1/?igshid=2azfcbw8cliu
