What’s the timeline of Wallace and Gromit that could include the movies and other stuff that’s canon (or not?), like World of Invention, Cracking Contraptions, the video games, comics and possibly the Shaun the sheep cartoon and movies?
I have a bit of problems figuring out when everything would occur.
Ooh good question!
I feel I may need some help answering this one, as I haven't consumed the entirety of W&G media/been a long time since I've revisited it (e.g. the comics). And I will straight up admit I don't know where I would place World of Invention in the timeline, just because it rather a fourth-wall-breaking series - so that's one I will leave for anyone who wants to take a stab at placing it.
But I'll try to break down what I can and others can chime in with their thoughts in the comments 😁.
I've only just started typing and, despite not doing an excessive amount of research, besides a quite google to double check a couple of facts, I can already feel this post is turning into a full-on essay post, soooo I'm gonna stick a read more line here. I'll try to use GIFs where I can to break it up a little so it's not just a big wall of text.
Those that want to proceed have been forewarned 🤣
Easiest to start with are the shorts. I feel it's pretty valid to assume the release years = where they fall on the W&G timeline (although I have seen some people online believe a different order, possibly due to how some of the DVDs' layouts). I'm going to stick with the release years and say as follows:
A Grand Day Out (AGO)
The Wrong Trousers (TWT)
A Close Shave (ACS)
I believe there is a theory that AGO could be a dream sequence, possibly hinted at by the rocket wallpaper seen in TWT opening. But, wherever or not its considered canon, I feel safe to say, this is defintely number one.
Side note, I have begun headcanoning that Gromit is the dog equivalent of being in his teenage years in AGO - I mean, this clip alone just gives that bored 13-14 teen energy, waiting for Dad to get back with the crackers so they can go to space already:
Where Cracking Contraptions go on the timeline sort of depends. I definitely put it before The Curse of the Were Rabbit because CoWR definitely gives the impression that this happens later than the shorts. We also know that Shopper 13 happens after ACS and not long after, considering the duo still has Shaun and he's not grown his fleece back in full. And Tellyscope definitely takes after TWT, considering Wallace's reaction to 'When Penguins Turn'.
But I say it depends on whether you think the episodes of Cracking Contraptions take place as one block of time together (so following the order of the episodes) or if you think of them as snapshots of Wallace and Gromit's life, spread out over time, meaning they could take place alongside either TWT or ACS.
To keep it simple, though, I would lump them together and put the after ACS, with CoWR following after.
Titan magazines started debuting the comics after the release of CoWR. As I only recall memories of reading them/screenshots I've seen online, I feel I would also put them as taking place perhaps after the film, just because we do see some CoWR characters pop up on occasions, although, you can make the same argument I made with CC and say some of the adventures happened before and some after. But definitely after ACS, considering we see Wendolene pop up in more than one of the comics and the duo already know her (and, from the wiki, one storyline where Preston is turned back evil). Plus, there's even a comic where Feathers breaks out, holds Gromit hostage and forces Wallace to work for him - I assume treated as non-canon now (but I never got to read part two of that plotline, gosh damn it!).
4. Cracking Contraptions (CC)
5. The Curse of the Were Rabbit (CoWR)
We also see a few adverts pop up around this time (The DFS, the National Trust Jubilee, Yorkshire Tea and so on, just the name a few). A number of these feature Lady Tottington herself and/or Tottington Hall, so I would place these ads as after CoWR. As I don't think we could say for deifntely if they took place before or after the comics (more than likely would have happened simulantously), I would probably lump them together to save the hassle of figuring that out.
Onto the games now, Telltale's Grand Adventures is widely assumed to take place after CoWR, and, seeing as we see Turbo Chef repurposed as a Mixer, I'll say most certainly after CC, too. Somehow, I've always assumed the GA came before A Matter of Loaf and Death, when in actuality, they were released in 2009, a year after AMoLD, 2008 (and the mistake I made is now the timeline I follow in my Vindictive series, but tbf, that series is a complete canon divergence, so I say I'm allowed to go off script 😂).
While it's designed to exist outside any timeline, if we were to include it, interestingly, I would put the PowerWash Simulator Wallace and Gromit DLC right before AMoLD. Assuming it does take place in the W&G timeline, I based this decision solely on the fact that in the first level, we see the Bake-A-Lite clock on the wall. Gromit would have absolutely, a hundred percent, completely canon, chucked that clock right into the trash can as soon as AMoLD was done.
We've known since TWT how this one can hold a grudge
Also, while we do see the AMoLD style of van in the fourth level, the house very much does not have a baker's windmill attached (but that would have been a fun level to do ngl!). Sooo yes, I argue Powerwash is just before Wallace started building all the baking contraptions (people are welcome to argue against that though).
The Big Fix Up does also feature the W&G duo interacting with the real world. But, with the reveal of just who Bernard Grubb is, it's safe to assume this game comes after AMoLD. I would place it after GA just as a personal preference and seeing as the release was much later, but it can take either or before really.
A while back, I also made a poll asking where people put Vengeance Most Fowl in the timeline, considering the film depicts a much older Mackintosh, but no sign of Fluffles. Most of you voted VMF comes after AMoLD (and that Fluffles is just off on her own adventures elsewhere, either attending Dogwarts or with a new lady companion, Lady Tottington or Wendolene perhaps).
With that, I would therefore continue the list as:
And then a blasted sheep comes to ruin all my hard work 🤣
6. Comics and Ads
7. PowerWash
8. A Matter of Loaf and Death (AMoLD)
9. Grand Adventures (GA)
10. The Big Fix Up
11. Vengeance Most Fowl (VMF)
Shaun's a weird one. Because we, of course, know the series has to take place after ACS, because a) he's older in the series and b) ACS is his literal debut.
But we also know from the first STS Movie that Shaun grew up on the farm, with the Farmer, Bitzer and the flock. Yet, the flock do not seem to be the same flock depicted in ACS (I feel we would have noticed Shirley amongst them otherwise). We also see the ACS jumper return in a Christmas special - yet it fits Shaun perfectly, despite him being obviously older.
There was a theory that perhaps the Shaun we know in the STS series is a descendant of the ACS Shaun - mainly brought by the fact that the W&G seems to be depicted as the late 50s-60ish era, yet, STS is mostly set in the modern era, with modern tech like phones clearly shown.
But then VMF comes in and shows us the Farmer clearly existing around the same time as Wallace - and now my head hurts! 😭
For the sake of my own sanity, it's best to assume the W&G universe is a kind of Beanotown where it can be both the late 50s, etc., and modern times.
It's been a while since I've watched the whole STS (have rewatched 1-3, as they're the ones I have on Prime), so I won't get into the nuts and bolts of where each season lies in the timeline. I also still have yet to watch Farmageddon, or the Llama special, so I can't be too specific with those.
But, as a millienial growing up watching the show, it is quite fun to see how throughout the show, the technology mimics the time (the first series still featuring things like Polaroids, which would still have been in use around that time, even though digital cameras were becoming the norm) and then the first movie having more modern phones and a whole social media campaign segement as the Farmer becomes Mr X.
I think, with that, we could say that the early STS series took place either simultaneously with CoWR or just after (probably more likely simultaneously or just after the Titan comics). With the series starting before AMoLD, I would assume the first series started before that film, too. Farmageddon would need to take place a lot later, so more likely after GA. But, seeing as it was released before the Big Fix Up, I will place it in the timeline before that game. I will also be assuming the new Beast of Mossy Bottom comes after VMF.
I will leave it to the STS fans here to be more accurate with where individual seasons of STS fall in the timeline, but here's what I would imagine the timeline to be:
A Grand Day Out
The Wrong Trousers
A Close Shave
Cracking Contraptions
Curse of the Were Rabbit
STS Series (Start)
Comics and Ads
PowerWash
A Matter of Loaf and Death
Grand Adventures
STS 1st Movie
Farmageddon
The Big Fix Up
Vengeance Most Fowl
The Beast of Mossy Bottom
If Shaun threw a spanner in the works, then the Chicken Run series is a wrecking ball - I don't even know where to start! I do believe, if what I've seen with the Easter Eggs in the Eggstraction game (having no switch, I can't really confirm more than what I've seen others post about), then Dawn of the Nugget possibly takes after AMoLD (if the theories around Reginald are true). Where though...er....
I think I'm beginning to flag, so I will, for now, leave the Chicken Run series out of it 😅, along with films Flushed Away, Arthur Christmas and Robin Robin (at least we can be assured where films like Early Man and Pirates! would fall, eh? 🤣).
I feel I have also missed a ton of W&G stuff out, but the good thing about Tumblr is that I can always do a reblog if I find out more info down the road (and others can reblog and add their own timelines too!).
Thank you for getting it to end, so sorry it was such a long-winded reply, I needed to gather my thoughts and work it all out in my head 🤣
Here's a Wallace's wave for getting through it all
Fantastic post! May I add some of my thoughts nobody asked for?
I headcanon STS seasons 1 through 5 are happening after CoWR and before GA, with Season 6 happening shortly before or after STS 1st Movie (as both this season and a movie have some social media shown in them), followed up by The Flight Before Christmas, and Season 7 happening after VMF and before TBOMB (with no particular logic here - it's literally when these things came out).
(those are Season 6 screenshots - couldn't find better ones unfortunately)

Ngl, I feel Gromit now has compiled a full-on file of questions he uses to interrogate any of Wallace's future love prospects.
And of course, Wallace, going completely bright red from embarrassment the entire time, is the one who's forced to read them aloud.
Some Wallace doesn't mind asking: "Are you an animal lover?" "Do you like cheese?" "How do you feel about inventing?" and other questions that are fairly normal to ask someone you're seeing and would perhaps have saved a bit of heartache in the past, if he had brought those topics up sooner.
But others...
"Gromit, I'm not reading that!"
*Do we want another Piella Bakewell situation?*
"No, but you can't just straight ask someone if they're a murderer!"
*Fine, read the next one.*
"Do you have any grievances or personal vendettas against please insert the job title or field of work we're currently in? Wallace, do not read the words in the parentheses out loud - lad, that's literally the same question!"
*No, that's one to rule out them hiring someone to kill you*
"How many questions are about me getting axed?"
*Five* ... *Well, eight, if you add up the ones asking if they would want to kill you if you became the Were-Rabbit again*
"Gromit! This is ridiculous! *To love interest* I'm so sorry about this! *Back to Gromit* Look, you need to be somewhat reasonable here!"
*We'll come back to those at the end, then.*
"There's no talking you out of this, is there? ...Okay, next question. Are you only dating Wallace so you can use one of his contraptions to incriminate him in a crime? Gromit! Couldn't you have phrased that some way else?! Someone might be misled into thinking I was actually dating Feathers McGraw!"
Kinda hope the ending plot just like the curse of the were rabbit one, the beast farmer sacrifice himself from a hunter to save his flocks or somethin like that lol
Shaun and Bitzer have such a good dynamic it’s one person who had a leadership role forced onto him what he didn’t necessarily want but he does his best even if it makes him seem uptight at times and one person with a natural sense of leadership and responsibility but a very laidback approach combined with a need for fun and adventure and while they sometimes clash due to their differences, in the end they complement each other and bring out the best in one another. And they always have each other’s back, even in the most stressful of times. Even when they’re arguing or have different opinions, when it really matters they stand side-by-side and they know that they both want the same thing, which is to keep their loved ones safe and happy. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.
God I hope everyone knows that I deeply love Wallace & Gromit and Shaun the Sheep, like pls take me seriously guys, any fanart of them makes my day and pls never stop drawing thêm I would stare at those fanart all day
You’re in luck! I posted my headcanons for them right here!
Althoughhhh I do have a couple more!
Timmy’s mom is the exact opposite of any MIL stereotype. If she learned Timmy has a partner or at least a crush and he brings that partner/crush home, the first thing she’d say is “Welcome to the family”
I’m also currently playing around with the hc that she has a double life as a secret agent. Think of her as the sheep version of Perry the Platypus lol.
She got that job in the first place after ACS bc she doesn’t want to see any other animals getting harmed like her loved ones and she kept it a secret all this time cuz it’s a dangerous job and she wants to keep her flock safe from all the criminals she deals with
Timmy’s mom is the type to hustle someone when playing a game of pool. She acts modest/pretends to not know how to play but when her opponent gets cocky, she obliterates them
Timmy’s mom in the beginning: ”accidentally” uses the wrong side of the cue
Timmy’s mom after her opponent says 100 pounds a ball: Timmy, be a love and bring out mummy’s special stick~
Hazel almost immediately gained a crush on Lexi when she saw her. It was like a love at first sight kind of thing. You know that scene in Despicable Me 2 where Margo saw Antonio for the first time? Exactly like that
Nuts was also a little TOO protective of Hazel when she and Lexi started seeing each other
Remembering that Nuts has a grandpa in the comics and now I’m imagining him being a senile, Willy Wonka type sheep for some reason
Shirley’s basically a demigoddess. I wanna say her dad (MASSIVE jerk/deadbeat btw) is like the god of shepherds or smth and has magic wool, hence why Shirley conveniently has anything the flock needs and why Shirleyverse happened
Nuts thinks he was named after food. He only realizes the truth when he names his kid with Shirley after a nut. And then Shaun and Hazel have to explain that he was named “Nuts” cuz of his eyes and weird personality
Nuts is the type to bring flashcards with pick-up lines on them when on a date only to drop them all over the place
The flock, the chickens, and Mower Mouth each gave the Farmer the equivalent of the silent treatment after the events of “Farm Park”. Dirty looks, uncooperative behavior (only listening/talking to Bitzer) and keeping their distance until Bitzer told him to apologize
Additional hc: You guys ever see that scene in Dumbo where the kids were teasing Dumbo and then his mom basically went wild animal and started spanking one of the boys? And then she got locked up and called a “mad elephant”? Something very similar happened with Timmy’s mom and that’s why she wasn’t near Timmy in the episode. Like, she saw the kid overfeeding Timmy and chasing him, got pissed (as she should), and went towards the parents to try to get them to control their child. But as soon as the Farmer saw her scolding the parents, he took her away and put her in the barn
The Wizard of Oz is one of Nuts’ favorite movies
When Hazel gets feelings for/starts dating Lexi, she goes to Timmy’s mom for advice. Not only does she have more experience in a relationship, but she ALSO fell in love with someone from the rival farm
Timmy’s mom sings like a British Jessica Rabbit
Shirley can do this
Here’s a fun reminder: One of the twins (Fred), actually kissed Trumper in the movie to distract him from the flock’s attempt to break Shaun and Bitzer out of that so-called “shelter”, you know, since they dressed as a woman whom Trumper flirted with throughout the movie. Jim never lets his brother live it down. Everytime Jim is losing an argument, he just brings it up and automatically wins

Got any headcanons of Bitzer? Y'know, the sheepdog?
BOY DO I? :D
Based on previous episodes in the earlier seasons, the fandom has come to the conclusion that the Farmer lived on the farm his whole life and that Bitzer’s dad (I named him Baron) belonged to the Farmer’s dad. BUT since everyone likes to imagine Bitzer’s POV during “A Close Shave”, I hc that Bitzer became a sheepdog sooner than expected.
His dad officially retired after Wendoline and Preston kidnapped several of the Farmer’s sheep, including little Shaun and his parents. Baron’s guilt, along with the recent passing of Bitzer’s mother, caused him to pass the job to little Bitzer, believing he could continue his legacy.
Side hc for papa Bitzer: He and Shaun’s mom, Dolly, were rivals so make of that what you will
Despite being unpopular with other dogs, he has made some friends his own species! They’re a butch female German Shepherd who’s a police dog and a brave, spunky Jack Russel Terrier who’s always ready to pick a fight. Bitzer tends to show off a little to try to impress them. He also thinks he’s the normal one out of the three lmao
He’s also befriended Mr. Tweedy’s dogs from Chicken Run:Bonzo and Fido (remember them?). Well sorta. They’re not bullies, per se, but they often like to tease him about his job and how much of a pacifist he is despite his species (Anatolian’s are generally more guard dogs)
Bitzer has at least 3 siblings who are more successful than he is. When they come visit, he tries ignoring all his insecurities and pretends to be more successful than he lets on. Turns out they actually look up to him!
You didn’t hear it from me, but someone from the royal family has a dog that looks just like him 👀
He has his mother’s gentleness, hence how he’s so good with Timmy
Between him and Shaun, he fell harder
Shares his romance novels with Timmy’s mom and even Shirley
Is a fan of rock and roll
Bitzer tore the Farmer a new one after the events of Farm Park (aka my least favorite episode). When the Farmer questioned why some of his animals were suddenly angry at him, he listed everything the Farmer did as well as what he failed to do. And he didn’t hold back, he told his owner about what his animals endured while he was too busy cowering and hiding from everyone. He suggested Farmer apologize to the animals that were involved in the whole fiasco before they lose their trust in him completely. Luckily, the message got through
I think that’s the second time someone asked for some Mower Mouth content!
Name: He got the name “Mower Mouth” because of how quickly he ate the Farmer’s vegetables ever since he was a kid. The Farmer thought he was so original to compare his goat to a lawnmower and he still feels proud of it to this day
Family: Apparently, in the preschool spinoff of STS callled “Timmy Time”, there’s a goat character named “Kid”. Since he has has a big appetite, I’m gonna hc him as Mower Mouth’s favorite nephew
Hobbies and interests: In addition to eating, he also happens to love listening to heavy metal music (on account of his theme), rock climbing, and parkour.
