Little Mermaid AU + Mabifica
I recently realized how utterly, criminally adorable A Little Mermaid AU with Mabel and Pacifica would be, and so just in time for the end of Mermay, enjoy this little ficlet of my thoughts on that.
Mermaid Princess!Pacifica lives under the sea, her parents are King and Queen of the North Sea, and are also The Worst. Currently, they’re trying arrange a financially prosperous marriage to Prince Mermando that will take place when she turns 18.
Like any teenager, she deals with her feelings by moping around the ocean, occasionally bursting into song and complaining to her Ironically Sad Clownfish friend, Robbie, who composes her angsty ballads. One day while they’re hanging out/complaining about the folks, a golf ball plops into the water and hits her in the end. Enraged, Pacifica swims to the surface to give those sailors a piece of her mind, they’ll be hearing from her royal lawyers for sure-
-and finds Prince Dipper and Princess Mabel having a grand ole time, a birthday party with family and friends on their great uncles’ boat. Seeing a family have fun together fills her with yearning, and she decides then that she’d do anything to be human; it seems like the solution to all her problems!
A conniving sea-witch named Gideon offers to turn her human, IF she does lil ole him a favor. Gideon wants the heart of Princess Mabel, so if Pacifica can dose her with the love potion that will make her fall in love with him, he’ll make her human permanently. Pacifica agrees to those terms.
Meanwhile, Princess Mabel’s preparing for the official royal gala celebrating her and Dipper’s birthday, and confides in Dipper that she’s hoping to snag her first kiss. Her parents secretly hope that she’ll hit it off with Marius, thereby assuring a treaty between kingdoms.
Pacifica, under the guise of a shipwreck survivor, meets Candy and Grenda on the beach. She brushes off the peasant girls (not knowing that they’re the princess’ besties) but they insist on taking her home. Candy’s the apprentice of famed local inventor, Fiddleford McGucket. On an errand for Ford, Mabel visits his workshop and sees her friends, along with Pacifica. She’s instantly awed (and a wee bit smitten) and vows to become the girl’s friend, much to Pacifica’s confusion and chagrin. Poor girl just doesn’t know how to deal with instant, unconditional kindness w/out ulterior motives.
Cute shenanigans ensue. Boat rides. Mini golf competitions. Karaoke sessions of corny love songs that relate to real life way more than they have any right to.
By the time the ball arrives, Mabel’s determined to have her first kiss and asks Pacifica to meet her on the dance floor. It’s the perfect chance to dose her with the potion and gain her freedom, but Pacifica realizes she can’t go through with it, ‘cause she genuinely cares about Mabel now.
Cryptid-hunter-in-training and Mayor of Paranoid Town aka Dipper, who hasn’t trusted Pacifica from the beginning, discovers her secret and they team up to stop Gideon, who’s come to the ball disguised as Marius (the real Marius is subsequently found and saved by Grenda, his gal in shining armor).
When Gideon attempts to smite them for foiling his plan, Mabel snatches his amulet, taking away his magic in the process - and undoing all his spells, including the one that made Pacifica human.
From her punch bowl of shame, a transformed Pacifica confesses the truth, expecting Mabel to hate her. Of course, Mabel’s a forgiving soul and doesn’t stay mad at the lie. As for the being half-fish part, why would she even hide that it’s like the coolest thing ever?! (So she could totally remain a mermaid, but if she really wants to be human Mabel still has Gideon’s amulet, so that’s totally okay, too)
And then they live happily ever after.
