I recently attended a whiskey tasting event featuring Arcard Label whiskey, held at the bar "Genkaware" in Ikebukuro!
I was surprised to discover just how delicious good whiskey can be!
The cocktail the bartender made for me was delicious!
The whiskey with the Arcard label is apparently Glan Moray 2008.
That whiskey has a fruity and light flavor, and I think it's the perfect whiskey for Alucard, who is curious and loves fun things!
You can try this Alucard-labeled whiskey and the Drifters-themed Shimazu Toyohisa-labeled whiskey at the bar "Genkaware" in Ikebukuro, so if you're interested, please check it out!
I'm going to write at length in English about the illustration titles for my Hellsing fan art collection, "Koyumeikyouhakei 'A'".
I realized that if you don't understand Japanese, how can you even look it up?
Purchase via the link above!
First, I will write about the title of the illustration collection itself, "Koyuumeikyouhakei."
"Koyuu" is about being distinctive.
"Meikyou" is a word I coined by combining the kanji characters for "to ring" and "to resonate." While it's usually written as "鳴り響く" (narihibiku), it's not pronounced "meikyou."
"hakei" means "waveform." I superimposed the transformation of sound, which is a song, into a visible illustration style onto the waveform, which is a graph of sound vibrations.
The final "A" is, of course, the initial "A" of Alucard.
---Explanation of the illustration title begins here---
1&2.幻(Maboroshi)
The Japanese term "Maboroshi" can refer to a variety of things.
Hallucinations, fantasies, mirages, things that don't actually exist—all of these can be called Maboroshi.
This collection of illustrations, which begins with the title "Maboroshi," depicts a dream that the enigmatic vampire Alucard shows you one night. Dreams can also be described as a form of Maboroshi.
3.回遊(Kaiyuu)
"Kaiyuu" usually refers to the long-distance swimming of marine fish and whales across the ocean.
Applying this to people, it refers to things like wandering around long distances or visiting various places.
I envisioned Alucard as someone who, despite his long life as a human and then as a vampire, still seemed to be enjoying himself.
4.背水(Haisui)
"Haisui" is a word written with kanji characters that mean "back" and "water."
The meaning originates from the Japanese military term "haisui no jin" (fighting with one's back to the wall).
That represents a dangerous strategy of trying to win a battle by cutting off one's own escape routes.
The image I have of Alucard is that he has already lost a lot, stained with blood and various other things, yet still stands there proudly.
5.約束(Yakusoku)
This is simple. "Yakusoku" means promise.
However, while the title may seem simple and lighthearted at first glance, what exactly does the word "promise" mean when spoken by a vampire who has lived for many years?
Imagining what it might be is one of the ways to enjoy this collection of illustrations.
6.形代(Katashiro)
"Katashiro" is probably an unfamiliar word to you.
This term refers to a doll made of paper or cloth that is used as a substitute for a human being in Japanese magic and prayer.
7.狼(Ookami)
This is also easy. "Ookami" means wolf.
If you research the ecology of wolves in detail, you might understand what the illustration means.
8.混濁(Kondaku)
"Kondaku" means something that is mixed and cloudy.
I imagined him devouring many people, his sense of self becoming blurred.
9&10.鏡像(Kyouzou)
"Kyouzou" means an image reflected in a mirror, or one's own reflection in a mirror.
I tried to imagine how a vampire, who doesn't appear in mirrors, sees themselves.
11&12.諸共(Morotomo)
"Morotomo" is a word that is rarely used on its own.
This word is used to describe negative phenomena such as storms and tsunamis, implying that they involve or engulf surrounding objects.
However, I thought that negative image suited Alucard perfectly, so I used it as the title.
13.憧憬(Doukei)
It's a difficult word in Japanese and is rarely used in everyday conversation.
The meaning is something like a longed-for landscape.
Alucard has an ideal and tries to grasp it, but it's like trying to reach a cloud—something far away and unattainable.
14.碧落(Hekiraku)
This is also a difficult Japanese word. It's a combination of "heki" (碧), which means something between blue and green, and "raku" (落), which means to fall, so it refers to the blue sky. From there, it's used to mean something that is very far away.
15.面影(Omokage)
This phrase means finding common ground with people close to you, especially parents and children.
It is used not only to describe blood relationships, but also to explain similar behavioral characteristics and habits.
16.現世(Utsushiyo)
This is a slightly difficult term.
This word means the real world.
It conveys the image that he is indeed living in his own real world.
17.鳳(Ootori)
This single kanji character is not a word that is often used.
Originally, the word referred to the legendary bird Houou, and hou is considered to be the male of this bird.
I was inspired by the line "My name is Hermes' bird" from Hellsing.
18.埋火(Uzumibi)
This is a word that is rarely used in everyday life.
It is represented by the kanji characters for "buried fire."
The image is that the warmth of the buried fire or charcoal, which has been kept from being extinguished by the wind, is radiating down to the surface of the ground.
19.遠雷(Enrai)
This is another word that isn't used very often in everyday life, but it occasionally appears in games.
It's a word that means thunder rumbling in the distance.
I'm imagining a scene where he says, "I can hear thunder in the distance."
20.山彦(Yamabiko)
"Yamabiko" refers to the phenomenon where, if you shout towards distant mountains, your voice echoes and can be heard repeatedly.
In other words, I wanted to convey the image that, like a supernova of stars, even though the person who shouted towards the mountains is no longer there, the echo can still be heard.
21.連弾(Rendan)
This phrase refers to two people playing the piano together.
In short, he is a very fascinating character, but the story of HELLSING wouldn't work with him alone.
And he cares deeply for many people.
For these reasons, I chose this word as the title, which implicitly conveys that he is not alone.
22&23&24.足跡(Ashiato)
This word means footprints.
The path he has walked has certainly not been easy.
Yet, he has walked it in his own way.
That's the image I get.
25.撃針(Gekishin)
This word refers to the firing pin, the mechanism that allows a gun to fire a bullet.
Alucard is a character who uses guns, and I used this word in the title because I felt that his strong convictions and his inability to compromise them, which are not very dexterous, are similar to a gun.
26.暁(Akatsuki)
"Akatsuki" means dawn, but it's not commonly used in everyday conversation. "Yoake" is more frequently used, but I think "Akatsuki" sounds cooler.
This collection of illustrations depicts a journey through the night with him, but it is coming to an end, as if a dream is ending, capturing the fleeting, fantastical image of dawn approaching.
27.残月(Zangetsu)
"Zangetsu" refers to the moon that remains visible until dawn.
The image is that night, his territory, is ending, yet the moon, a symbol of the night, is still faintly visible.
This concludes the explanation of the origins of the titles of the illustrations included in this collection.
I tried my best to convey my message using a translation app, so please overlook any awkward phrasing.
