Fearless: Where it all begins
It was morning of 2008, I am walking towards my classroom, when someone gave me a piece of paper with words in it. She said it was a love letter from someone. I didn’t believe it because who would send me a love letter. I read the letter. I looked as I start to familiarize with the words. I noticed two names on the paper - Romeo and Juliet. As a kid, you would know who are these two people. Yeah! Shakespeare.
As I read the letter, I realized it is a story, however it is quite different from Shakespeare’s. It’s a happy ending. I realized it is more than a story, it’s a song. It’s been playing everywhere and making itself popular. Love Story. The very first song I’ve heard from her.
It was a weekend. I am watching TV when I tuned in to a music channel. As an almost a teenager, you tend to discover your taste of music, your genre, yourself. As I watch the television a music video suddenly plays. It’s like a movie but completely covered with a song. The girl and the guy were dating, very happy couple, until the girl discovered that her guy is cheating on her. Unlike Love Story, this one is not so happy ending. It kind of sad but at the same time you’re amazed of how good the song is. White Horse. The first heartbreak song I heard from her.
From then I started questioning: who is this girl? Why is she so good at writing all these songs? I knew there is something in me that wanted to listen to her more. But it is strange for me to listen to her because society back then tells us to stick to things appropriate to our gender. And as a girl who tells her story, it feels like it’s wrong for me to listen to her because I’m a boy and it is not my story to tell.
Have you ever feel of being a wallflower? Because I was a wallflower back then. But as I grow on the sidelines, I’m starting to realize the real me. It’s been here all along and it was a shame I couldn’t see it. Then here comes another love letter. This time it is a secret love letter. A girl who’s in love with her bestfriend who couldn’t see her, and nobody else sees her. It was this moment I realized she’s telling my story. It is more than what the society is telling me to do, it is more than me being a boy. I realized I am more than what they think I am. I am free now. Thank you, You Belong With Me.
From then on I fell in love with her. The woman who changed me forever. She told my story that made me what I am today - Fearless!
