Somehow, as we have broadened our awareness of and support for gender nonconformity, we've narrowed what we think a boy or a girl can look like and do.
While celebrating the diversity of sexual and gender identities, we also need to celebrate tomboys and other girls who fall outside the narrow confines of gender roles.
But why the word "tomboy"? "A girl who looks and/or acts like a boy" still defines the person in terms of preexisting framing social structures...
(I know, language is also a social construct. It's not simple to change or modify existing institutions and structures and norms & etc.) #sigh
