"I volunteer myself to lick Toadie, y'know, for science."
âHow about you get bent, Wolf.â
" I'll protect you, Uncle Slippy! "
âYea?
    I bet you will!â
CAN I LICK YOU
      âEW. NO!â
since you're a toad does that mean someone can get high by licking you?

â âA dame behind the wheel.â
   Who even talks like that?â
âItâs got a face as loud as a shuttle horn and no filter.â
âYâgot three guesses.â
âOnly three? Â Â Â Â Gee--I dunno, Fox . .Â
This oneâs a real head scratcher.â
â âA dame behind the wheel.â
   Who even talks like that?â
he said damn
           âH e c k.â
[FALCO]
âOf what, huh?â
He answered, as always. He came back, as always, like the pitiful dog he was, but god help him if he didnât do it with the force of every twisting thing inside of him; every shapeless, dangerous thing, painful as they were senseless. He would teach him, if it killed him, not to call him back anymore. He would teach him, if it killed him, not to care.
All giving a damn ever did was make everything so hard. So complicated. So â
âOf what?â Falco snapped. âLosinâ the team? Losinâ my friends? Beinâ alone? Is that what Iâm afraid of?â
âNo - thatâs you. And Iâm nothinâ like you,â he said. âI donât need people sitting on my wing every damn second to keep me from getting blown away. I donât need my friends to hand me jobs outta pity. And I donât whine like a bitch when people walk out, âcause thatâs what people do. I donât care about any of this namby-pamby bullshit â â
Liar.
Falco drove the word away with a finger in Slippyâs chest.
â â so you can go cry about how afraid you are to someone who does. You ainât my problem anymore.â
As a child heâd been adverse to confrontation, so much so the very idea of it would lock the breath in his chest in a vice so tight it would terrify him. This wasnât much different, maybe--Heâd seen Falco afraid once or twice, though the Avian would never admit the emotion heâd harbored in those moments their lives depended on it. There was knowing fear and understanding fear, and then there was this--directionless, rudderless aggression, and Slippy frowned.
Fox did this too, in his own way, they were similar. There had always been a balance to their invisible luggage, and the ballast they knew kept them steady once now faltered, wavering with the passing hours. The weight had been disturbed, there was a hole where someone important once resided, and no degree of bickering now would make that reality less difficult to swallow.
The mechanic didnât combat those jabs, they had been true enough. Of course he feared loneliness, he feared the loss of his friends--of his FAMILY--
âYou can lead a horse to water, but you canât make it drink.â
â--Youâre not the only one leaving, Falco.â
It came frankly, level--just like always. Slippy toad knew fear, what living creature could say they didnât? What he didnât fear was Falco.
Not anymore.
âFox is going. I donât know where,          Heâs not said he is, but I know.        I know you say you donât care, fine.     You donât have to convince me, Falco. You have to convince YOU first. --No one said you were caged here, least of all me.       I thought youâd give a damn, is all.
         --Especially about him.â
acewingâ:
Falco gave him an appraising once-over, folding his arms.
âThatâs a skint-ass bet. What, you afraid youâll choke?â
âTwenty says you canât hit a bullseye. Take it or leave it.â
He saddles one hand on his hip, but the other is held aloft--not once wavering. A gesture of good will despite how their little wager began. Ten more units? Who said he wasnât a gambling man?
âHeh. Alright. Deal.
      Your lunch money, Falco.â

You give that jerk a lot of passes. I really don't think he deserves it,
â--Falcoâs not all bad, yâknow.     Yeah, heâs self centered sometimes, and vain,         and kind of a jerk, yeah.        but . . .
I think he cares a lot. More than he thinks he does, maybe.
      Besides, everyone needs friends, right?â
[FALCO]â:
âMaybe I blinked and missed it. Kinda like you do when you pull a trigger.â
âHey, if Iâm wrong, put some units on it. Iâll take you down to the gun range right. Now.â
âYeah?
    --Alright, fine.â
He held a hand aloft and smiled, the challenge was more readily met than before.
âTen units says youâre full of it.â
[FALCO]â:
âMeaning you can pull a trigger and it hit something.â
Falco kicked back in his seat, miming a shot.
âFive miles off what you were actually gunning for. Itâs sad.â
He stares for a long moment--then smiles.
âYouâve never ONCE watched me shoot, have you?â
[FALCO]:
âHey, Iâm givinâ you live savinâ tips, here. Hell knows you can handle a ballpoint way better than you can handle a blaster.â
âHey, hey--itâs that BALLPOINT that saves       YOU when youâre flyin,â feather-brain!
Nâ Iâll have ya know that I shoot just fine.â

[FALCO]â:
ââCourse the penâs mightier than the sword.â
âItâs small, itâs light, you can hide it in plain sight and itâs the perfect size nâ shape for jamming into an eye socket. Itâs the white-collarâs shiv.â
âYouâve been watching those         âBatmanâ movies again, havenât ya?â
