There was no denying that this kind of job excited her. Like most children, Mason had watched plenty of cartoons about superheroes growing up. Even if being a SHIELD agent was a far cry from being a sailor scout it was still electrifying to work behind the scenes like this. For once she didn’t have to worry about the possible consequences that came with using her abilities so openly. No more fretting about ending up on some crazed scientist’s operating table or locked behind bars. It was beyond freeing. The half-blood was also grateful to be avoiding the limelight so far, since she had no interest in drawing attention to herself. She was still a rookie, after all. At first, she had been nervous about being assigned to work with Angel. The man seemed so damn serious all the time, Mason was sure they were going to end up butting heads eventually. Now, with the golden arches in view, a much too wide grin curls onto her lips. Her earlier anxieties about the agent are nulled. Chuckling to herself, she digs the small silver key out of her pocket and within mere moments, the handcuffs are dropped at her feet. The briefcase stays firmly in place on her lap since their mission wasn’t quite complete yet. Their enemies hadn’t followed them to the drive-through which worked in their favor.

Mason is all smiles when Angel meets her gaze. Her beam only grows when Angel outlines his reasoning for pulling into the McDonald’s. He did have a fair point about their stakeout and the bathroom. It had been hours before they’d even moved from the car. Plus, the half-blood had never been one to shy away from bending the rules a little bit. “Right,” she agreed with a satisfied smirk. Oh were they ever going to get along splendidly. “I’ll take a large sweet tea and some fries,” she told him with a soft laugh, the earlier nervousness at the sound of bullets hitting the reinforced windows nowhere to be found. She leans back in her seat, eyes darting to the cars in line in front of them before her gaze returned to Angel. “That was some badass shit back there. If I had taken that hit, you probably would’ve had to carry me back to the car.”

He   never   really   messed   around   on   a   mission   before.   He   had   done   things   to   amuse   himself   but   never   disobeyed   orders   directly   or   indirectly.   The   truth   was   -   he   was   all   business   and   no   fun.   Angel   was   the   poster   child   for   an   agent   Fury   could   depend   on   and   expect   good   results.   He   had   recently   got   into   a   battle   of   wills   with   his   sister   who   complained   of   his   dry   and   stoic   personality.   Angel   knew   that   Nessa   was   probably   just   rebelling   and   frustrated   but   it   made   him   think.   Had   the   life   he   had   chosen   zapped   all   sense   of   spontaneity   and   fun   from   him?   Or   had   he   merely   been   burdened   with   more   responsibility   than   his   siblings   could   relate   to?   So   maybe,   just   maybe,   he   was   rebelling   against   the   thought   that   he   was   boring   now.

“I   am   not   used   to   working   with   others.”   He   admits   after   a   moment.   He   had   partners   in   the   past   but   none   stuck   around   too   long.   He   had   never   really   trusted   them   and   Angel   was   so   used   to   doing   it   all   alone.   Although,   today   he   learned   -   maybe   it   wasn’t   so   bad   to   have   someone   watching   his   back.   He’s   pulling   into   the   drive   through   and   ordering   her   fries,   sweet   tea,   and   something   for   himself   as   well.   He   wonders   if   they   looked   suspicious   as   he   felt   they   did.   Yet,   to   any   outsiders   they   were   another   unsuspecting   pair   looking   for   a   late   night   snack.   “I   could   have   carried   you.”   He   says,   “The   perks   of   being   enhanced.   You’d   feel   light   as   a   feather,   I   bet.”

There   was   always   worry   about   these   types   of   things.   The   last   thing   he   wanted   was   to   include   some   unfortunate   soul   put   in   the   lines   of   fire   on   his   behalf.   His   body   pressed   and   tensed   firmly.   Angel   has   been   captured   before.   The   thing   was   there   was   a   certain   risk   to   this   type   of   business.   His   fingers   pressed   firmly   into   the   ropes   and   with   a   firm   tug,   he’s   yanking   -   breaking   the   restraints   as   if   they   were   merely   shoe   strings   and   not   industry   grade   ropes.   The   perks   of   altered   strength.   And   as   quickly   as   that   happens,   his   hands   are   swinging   around   -   pulling   and   pushing   his   body   towards   the   man   nearest   to   him.   He’s   lithe   and   quick,   after   years   of   practice   and   execution,   wrapping   around   him   until   his   hands   grab   the   man’s   gun   from   his   holster   and   aimed   it   to   his   head.   Angel’s   brow   raises.   “Untie   her   and   get   your   buddy   to   give   her   his   gun.   Unless   you   want   to   test   the   limits   of   my   patience,   friend.”

Fraud was an essential part of her day to day life. Of course it was! She had to play human nearly every moment of every day, pretend like she didn’t know the inner workings of the minds that surrounded her. It’s part of the reason Mason took the job when SHIELD offered it. At least here she didn’t have to keep up the façade. In fact she was encouraged to use her abilities whenever they would come in handy. It was a breath of fresh air, even if the job wasn’t what she had envisioned when she had left Washington. Plus, compared to the actual Avengers, harboring some faery magic in her blood was rather tame since she was still from this planet. The briefcase swings wildly from the handcuff on her wrist as she sprints after Angel. Her calves were burning with how much effort it took to keep up with his longer strides, even while he was injured. She didn’t dare look back. Their objective here was to secure the Vibranium and get away, not go picking fights with the enemy (as much as she may want to).

Although Mason’s lungs are also on fire, Angel’s comment gets a snort out of her as they run. “I’ll remember that offer,” she told him. Finally, their SHIELD vehicle comes within view. The half-blood all but hurls herself at the passenger side door, panting as she slides onto the seat and pulls it shut behind her. As they peel away in a flurry of smoke and screeching tires, her hands move to cover her ears at the added noise of the gunshots. Fuck. Using her light had been the right move it would seem. For all her inhuman traits, she was still mortal. It’s not like she could just walk off a gunshot wound. Her heart rate slows as the mental signatures of their enemies fade away behind them while Angel drives. “We did,” she reassures him before beginning to dig through her jean pockets for the key to the handcuffs. “I don’t know about you, but I’m so thirsty right now,” she admits in a hoarse voice. 

There   were   a   lot   of   things   he   had   done   once   he   had   been   recruited.   He   had   gone   on   a   few   undercover   missions.   Angel   had   worked   loosely   with   the   Avengers.   He   hadn’t   wanted   the   notoriety   with   that   but   his   last   job   had   thrown   him   into   their   path.   Although,   that   had   been   a   lot   more   imminent   world   danger   than   this   had   been.   Angel   finds   that   working   for   SHIELD   kept   him   busy   doing   things   that   no   longer   benefited   solely   his   own   home   country   but   the   entirety   of   the   world.   However,   he   had   been   a   disciplined   soldier   but   that   weaned   off   a   little   when   he   realized   how   double-edged   his   orders   could   be.   Angel   was   loyal   to   SHIELD   but   he   was   not   tied   to   every   command.   So,   he’s   veering   off   to   the   first   exit   he   sees   with   a   yellow   and   red   sign   when   he   is   certain   they   aren’t   being   followed.   He   is   almost   certain   they   will   get   yelled   at   but   his   body   consumed   a   lot   more   calories   than   most   and   she   was   thirsty.   Who   was   he   to   deny   her   a   nice   drink   after   blasting   those   fools?   Angel   was   a   considerate   partner.   Or   a   self-serving   one.   Same   thing,   right?
