Enchanted, is a mid-length film project where the scripted relationship between fictional characters combines with the actual participants of an open-air queer diy film-festival.
It´s a hybrid drama-documentary that blends boundaries between fiction, realism, subjective and objective form, the festival and the characters who attend it. Such ephemeral places can be where people with non-majority positions reflect and empower one another, find intersections between their struggles, and those of others and to feel a sense of safety in numbers.
A committed group of queers have come together to create “Entzaubert” in times threatened by a rise in extremism and conformism in Europe. The diy film festival is set up over five days on a trailer site surrounded by woods on the edge of Berlin.
Gender-queer filmmaker Bri has been invited to show his film at Entzaubert, activist Anita is visiting Berlin for the festival. It looks like the two will finally realise the attraction between them. Trans woman Susanna is helping at the entrance, Bri´s gay friend Alfonz is perhaps there just to watch films. Against the backdrop of the festival Anita and Bri's initial flirtation turns to frustration as their internal histories and complexities surface. Meanwhile the festival itself is affected by external forces and internal tensions.
The dynamic of internalised vs projected shame which plays out between Anita and Bri and the others is mirrored in the wider events of the festival as the organisers tackle intrusions from the outside world and the expectations of the community.
Enchanted explores commitment, love and paranoia as it is reflected between different levels of temporal queer space.
Recently, right-wing tendencies have risen all across Europe. Even violently exerting their dogmatic expectations of how to lead lives, right-wing forces oppress creative potential and expression of politics in Europe. Spikes of hate-crimes against the queer community prove how this oppression transforms into a physical threat. Likewise, spaces safe for groups leading political and often economically precarious lives have become rare. But with this physical threat of oppression, spaces allowing for queer politics that are safer are needed more than ever before.
Therefore, with Enchanted, a team of experienced film-makers sets out to document the need for and the process of creating such safer spaces. Supported by a host of skilled scriptors, actors and producers, Enchanted will trace out a queer narrative, debating the forces of fear, shame, safety and in-betweenness for individuals. Enchanted is thus an ethnofictional experiment, both documentary as well as a fictional drama-thriller. This cutting edge format allows highlight the need, creation and instability of social safer spaces and their ephemeral nature in unique ways.
Enchanted will follow the Entzaubert Film-Festival, an autonomous, non-commercial queer film-festival in Berlin, happening every year since 2007. Happening at Schwarzer Kanal, a queer-political trailer-park.
Through the documentary element, the creative team of Enchanted is promoting and making accessible the non-hierarchical forms of participation and organization and the problems they are faced with.Â
Thus, Enchanted is interested to contribute to processes of developing strategies of organizing political queer spaces, combating exclusion, fostering tactics to empower and strategies to emancipate oneself.Â
In the fictional part, Bri, Anita, Alfons and Suwanna will tell their own stories and how they connect to the festival and towards safer spaces. This will uncover the semblance of safer spaces, their instability but also the potential of emotions in interpersonal dynamics and relationships.Â
