Outliars and Hyppocrates: A fun fact about apples (will be dubbed Outliars and Hyppocrates) is a Will Wood song from the Normal Album that reminds me of Mizuki Akiyama (and Mafuyu a bit)
"Did you know that the hole in the apple didn't come from the outside in? It was eaten from the core and out to the skin And that's why you'll never find the worm in it But a few bad ones won't spoil the eyes, if they fall far enough from the tree The rind is all you see, leave Eden with my seeds in your stomach."
The beginning of the song starts off with a 'fact' about apples, stating how the worm that eats through the apple from the inside (the area where the apple grew/the tree) and how not all apples spoil if they fall far enough from the tree. The rind (outside of the apple/surface level perception of a person) is left behind on both the eaten and non-eaten apples, so you can't tell what they're like until you eat it, thus leaving Eden with Apple seeds in the stomach of the eater.
Mizuki was bullied alot by the kids in her past and still is in the present, she can hope that one day she'll meet someone who is accepting of her. Mizuki will never be able to find someone who accepts her unless she tries an apple (talk to someone/meet someone). She must take a bite of an apple that she determines safe and hope.
"Well, this disease is defined by its treatment, you people make me sick Parlance of imbalanced, cambia's been challenged at best AstraZeneca's just theoretical Prints of your fingers in the Rorschach jigsaw, say you saw a treasure map Straight-jacket and tie, psychiatric supply, while we tragically try to fit into a trap,"
The next section describes how the condition of the apple(person) is determined based on how it was treated. "Parlence of Imbalanced," is most likely about a debate of how the outside of the apple is not fully formed, similar to how children can be heavily influenced. AstraZeneca is a pharmaceutical company so the next few lines about Rorschach tests, straight jacket, and other mental-related supplies is referring to that. This all makes these things seem like traps to be labeled.
Mizuki is considered weird due to her identifying as a girl and how people(classmates/society) have trouble comprehending that she is a girl despite how biological sex. It shows how Mizuki sometimes has to walk on eggshells when it comes to how she identify as.
This can also relate to Mafuyu who had to mask heavily and pretend to be someone she wasn't. How she almost lost her identity because she tried to appear perfect(normal) to everyone. Mafuyu also must walk on eggshells around everyone in order to keep up her mask.
"but, Who'd want to be human anyway? Who pilots all these crude machines? Why'd you come into this world or come out that way? Like freaks of nurture, well, isn't it funny? (Well, not ha-ha funny, but y'know, funny)."
The next section challenges the previous that says labels and how you appear to others is trite/pointless. That being a human anyways or existing is also going go be something difficult. It also questions both why the person was born this way/born in this fanily and why they have chosen to continue the way they were raised. It then calls the way people act, "freaks of nurture." And how it's so hilarious they continued that way (but not really)
Mizuki wishes to just exist, to be herself, to be mizuki, to be accepted for who she is, Mizuki. She wishes that the way she identified didn't affect how people treated her. It also relates to how she was raised, she was heavily influenced by her older sister, Yuuki. Yuuki is a very accepting and encouraging person to Mizuki. She makes clothes for mizuki, encourages mizuki to wear what she want, and continues to listen and accept Mizuki for being Mizuki.
This also relates to Mafuyu how she was basically made into a puppet because of how she was raised and how sometimes she is challenged by KAITO and Ena for not standing up to her mother. It also somewhat acknowledges that she can't stand up to her mother until she is supported/has a support system "(isn't it funny, well not hah-hah funny)."
"'Cause I doubt that you would even if you could change You think it makes you special, but it makes you strange I doubt that you would even if you could change The things that make you special are the things that make you strange."
This whole section is forcing people to realize that even if you don't personally care, you will still be considered strange and odd. That even if you/people accept something, you will still be considered strange. (I'm not gonna bring up this section until the end due to the difference in tone of the final one, sorry)
Mizuki is aware that she is strange and that people find her strange. She wants people to understand that she is different but that shouldn't make them treat her differently. She wants to be accepted, but a part of her knows that is potentially not possible.
Mafuyu in the main story says a similar thing (but instead relating to wanting to die to Ena, Kanade, and Mizuki. This shows how she's angry when people don't understand her, even when they feel the same and choose to pretend they don't.
"I am the shadows cast aside by gallows, and you the red-hot sky And if you're believers, then why would you grieve for the dead Instead of a devil that you never prayed for? You become immune to my toxic fumes My dose-dependent presence in your life It's all subjective, all due respect to the collective mind."
The 'strange' people are executed(toss asided/ignored/forced to act a certain way) while the 'normal' people watch/are the sky(ignore/perpetuate). The next line is is how when people say they are believers(accepting) but they still ostracize the different ones (grieve for the dead), instead of accepting them or encouraging or even believing(pray for a devil you never prayed for). The next line is about how some people become immune, (either accept or dont), to toxic fumes (the person themself. The next few lines appear to talk about the same thing as others but saying that it's incredibly subjective on whether or not the majority agree.
Mizuki was ostracized from her peers throughout her life, causing her to be isolated from other people (middle-school). The grieving for the dead line can be connected to what Students A B & C said in mizu5, "he'd be cute if it wasn't for... y"know?" (Heavily paraphased) instead of just acknowledging that Mizuki is a girl who dresses cute.
"but, Too weird to love, too scared to die too alien to take you home Horrified at the sight of my reflection in your eyes, I don't belong there Well, it's your conclusions that make mine delusions, so I make you sane You can thank me later."
The section talks about how how also letting someone accept and love you is difficult because of the environments which one was raised (back to the apple thing! Yayy..) it shows how if you want love, you have to accept other people in their supportiveness. It also draws on the fear of being supportive, of being a burden, of someone potentially just being kind out of pity. It also shows how sometimes people treat the same thing differently (your conclusions, make mine delusions). Such as a kind actions being interpreted differently (as love, or affection, or pity, etc..).
Mizuki was afraid that her group wouldn't accept her and that they'd would hate her and abandon her, or even worse, continue to be kind out of pity. Mizuki outright runs away from Ena multiple times because she both wants to tell her the secret but also not tell her and keep things the exact same. It shows how Mizuki must learn to take the risks of letting someone accept her after her entire life of having very little supportive members and being bullied.
"Who'd want to belong to anyone? (Ay, ay, ay, ay) I mean, what do people even do? So, if you love me, let me let you go, my love (ay, ay, ay, ay), so I can be no one"
The lyrics describe how it's pointless to belong(love) someone and how act of of support and love is baseless. It also puts into question the philosophy of "if you love it then let it go". The singer asks to be let go so they can become noone. This section kinda goes against the song as the singer is refusing help because they feel it's useless. The apples are all the same, why bother trying to find someone who could love them. It's very pessimistic.
This brings up Mizuki's tendency to run away and hide her problems and ignore them. Pretending that they're fine, that they can handle going on without anybody, they've done so so far, what's stopping them. It shows how Mizuki needs to open up so that Ena and others can accept her for who she is.
"When Chuang-Tzu awoke, he sat up almost choking Spat out a butterfly and said, ""Five more minutes, please? You wouldn't believe the dream I just had I mean, you were there, and you were there And you, and you, and you were there. "'
This section is a dream. Showing how Chuang-Tzu, a Chinese philosopher who believes how labels restrict us and that the self and world are connected seamlessly, wakes up from a dream. Asking for 5 more minutes of sleep, recalling the people he's talking to were there and getting more aggressive sounding as Will Wood continues to speak. It seems like something important was happening in the dream and the character/singer wants to continue the discussion in the dream instead of beginning said discussion with the people already around him.
Mizuki would rather dream and put off telling her secret, she hopes that if she does tell, it'll go perfectly and just how she wants. Like a dream. But that won't happen, and she could have this very conversation with Ena and the others if she simply wakes up and confronts everything she's afraid of.
That is my Outliars and Hyppocrates: a fun fact about apples, Mizuki (slight Mafuyu as well) analysis.
But that is an incredibly difficult task for someone who was surrounded by bad, worm-infested apples and only a few being accepting, it'll take all her might just to tell one person, nevertheless an entire group she'd incredibly close with.
"'Cause I doubt that you would, even if you could change The things that make you special are what make you strange I doubt that you would, even if you could change The things that make you special are the same that make you" x2
The first time this is sung, it's in the same fashion as all the other times but second time through. The sing sounds frustrated and mocking-sorted. Showing how frustrating and tiring it is to get a point across that isn't easily comprendable.
Hope you enjoyed.
(Also ignore how the final section has no Mizuki part)
