One of my favorite aspects about Devil May Cry is Nero’s character is how much it parallels and contrasts Vergil character.
Nero was born with nothing from the start as an orphan, but he was fortunate enough to have met Kyrie’s family to shape him into the character we all know and love. It’s because of the death of his adoptive parents and Credo that he desires power - specifically the power to protect (of course this also includes Kyrie first and foremost)
Vergil was born with a family (twin, mom, dad), but he lost his mom and was separated from Dante (idk where Sparda went. Presumably dead?) when demons attacked his home. Because of his inability to protect himself (and his family) at the time, he developed the desire to have power so that he could never be hurt again.
I haven’t described the full contrast in detail, but this is the gist of it.
The reason I’m saying all of this is bc these are the things that make me appreciate the original DMC games. Of course a lot of the finer details are found in the novels, but nonetheless, I love how the characters are written. That being said, I greatly dislike how the Netflix adaptation basically mixes up the character traits from the games and just give it to the wrong characters. It’s like they weren’t thinking why certain characters were written the way that were in the games.
What I mainly dislike about the Netflix adaptation is how it created a new subsection of the DMC fandom that tries to argue that the adaptation is better than the games.
Im not at all saying that you can’t enjoy the adaptation bc preferences exist and that’s understandable. What I don’t like is some of the newer fans trying to compare the adaptation to the game and then claim it’s better. Older DMC fans are rightfully upset abt how the adaptation handles beloved characters bc it is like watching your favorite series through a fun house mirror.
For a little perspective, I grew up watching the Resident Evil movies and not the games, I don’t even begin to attempt to compare the movies to the games bc I know the movies are very unfaithful to the game. I’m not at all against OG Resident Evil fans who talk badly abt the movies bc their reasons are justified. Nonetheless, I still enjoy the movies separately from the game, and I leave it at that (and I do enjoy the games btw). I accept the fact that the movies are bad (with respect to the original game series) but I still enjoy them.
