Arthur Pendragon is one of Camelot cricket Clubâs best players, an all rounder set to make the national team if he plays his cards right. That is, until he injures himself mid-match. Recovery is nasty on your own, so Gwen and Morganâs suggest Gwenâs friend Merlin to help out around the house while Arthur heals. Could we get some magic reveal headcanons where Merlin can finally stop being so bubbly and happy all the time and people are like o_O because suddenly he's this badass bitch who can fight and tear things apart with his mind and we were really robbed of BAMF!merlin in the series. Bonus points for merthur :D
Oooh I like this and have so many thoughts. One of which is b4 Merlin gets to be a bad bitch there is a period of time post-magic reveal that Merlin would STILL have to be bubbly. I always thought that would be an interesting arc to have for Merlin play as like a... Representative for all magical people at first and its entirely unfair and frustrating, but nobody really knows any better. For example:
- So Merlinâs magic reveal happens! Yay! Arthur is upset, but reasonable and has agreed not to kill/banish Merlin. Cool.
- However, Merlin is now the only (benevolent) magical entity that Arthur knows. Merlin knew that he would be put in a new role once his magic came out, but he didn't actually think of all that would entail. In the past, he's had to play the clumsy, happy, bubbly fool. Alas. That role is gone, but Merlin is also realizing he can't quite be himself yet either...
He still has to keep his temper in check so that no nobles can cry that magic is corrupted
He can't he dumb bc that makes other magic users look dumb
He can't be a know-it-all bc that makes magic users look too cocky
Yet he has to know EVERYTHING relating to magic - even cultural traditions/beliefs that he had never been exposed to bc...ya know. Illegal... But it would look bad if he didn't know as the resident magical person.
He has to be likeable for everyone to be comfortable around magic
Can't be too powerful as to intimidate people so he tones down his magic
But definitely not weak so people would still take him seriously
He has to present as someone with a more noble background to be listened to and thought to be educated
But dear GOD do not flout your dragonlord heritage in their faces! Can't you see it makes people uncomfortable?
- Yeah. It gets exhausting REAL fast. Also, Merlin isn't sure if he can talk about this it point it bc Arthur is already doing the unheard of by even allowing him to exist at this point. Wouldn't it be ungrateful to complain? Besides, he's still feeling betrayed that Merlin even kept it a secret for this long...
- So Merlin just goes all in and tries his best to balance all these things heâs supposed to be in order to best help his people. It can be... Haha a little (: bit (: taxing (:
Noble #1: so, youâre the kingâs new pet, are you? I wish you the best of luck. Bc I am a supporter of the throne I suppose I will not oppose his vote of confidence in you. Maybe you can teach us all to be a bit lazier and use magic to solve our problems, eh?
Merlin:...thank you, my lord. Though, I did grow up a farmer-
Noble #2: Ah, farm work. I have a a niece who knew a farmer. She said the work actually was good to tire them out and keep their minds busy. Are we sure we should give them magic to ease their workload? Don't want a rebellion on our hands!
Merlin: I don't quite agree with that sentiment, but I wasn't suggesting that-
Noble #1: ah, yes, you would have a more âempatheticâ view of the world, wouldn't you? Not likely to agree with us traditional folk despite the system having worked for so many years.
Merlin: well, to be fair, magic was legal much longer than it has been illegal. Before Utherâs rule-
Noble #2: then why do we even need you if it worked so well before?
Merlin: *inwardly dies*
- Merlin does this for a LONG time. I think realistically Arthur wouldnât just completely legalize magic right off the bat. It would be a slow process that would have to deal with a lot of political, cultural, and structural changes. Like, I think there would be a bunch of nuances we didnât get to see in the show that parallel with bigotry we see in our societies. The idea of there being bias against magical people, non-magical and magical people getting violent with one another over certain stigmas, misinformation about magical groups, stereotypes, microaggressions, laws that are promoting systematic oppression or not inclusive to magical people, etc... There is SO MUCH that would have to go beyond magic being legalized and Merlin has to deal & learn about ALL of that because heâs Emrys and helping Arthur fix it all is supposed to be his job.
- Also, people are still probably trying to kill Arthur. So like. RIP Merlin, I guess. Heâs real lucky Iâm not one of the show writers bc I wouldnât have let him live in peace post-magic reveal lol
- A breakdown at this point is inevitable. I had a post displaying a fun version of this breakdown in which Agravaine was pissing Merlin off and was like âwhatcha gonna do? use your magic to strike me down?â and Merlin just DECKS him.
- So yeah. Same vibes here. My man Merlin snaps at some point and gets in a fist fight with someone whether it be Agravaine or somebody else. He wins (: also Arthur is VERY shook by this and when he takes Merlin to the side to ask what is happening Merlin just... gets that emotional breakdown he deserves to have.
- Arthur is low key offended, but also horrified bc he thought Merlin had FINALLY stop pretending with him and now heâs hearing he has been doing nothing but pretending the past year or so.
- The first thing Arthur does is tell Merlin to spend some time in Ealdor (itâs an order to go tf home and âbring Gwaine with you bc I think only him and your mother can fix you at this pointâ) and then immediately creates a council specifically of magical people from across Camelot. Like, druids (obviously), some Catha (like Alator), high priests and priestess (the ones who havenât tried to kill him), etc... He also makes a point to hire another librarian who has more specialized knowledge on magic (the Geoffrey/OC rivalry and love story we deserve lol) so when Merlin comes back he isnât doing all this alone and his workload is cut in half.
- NOW Merlin gets to be more himself... And Camelot isnât ready for my badass boy. Heâs been holding in the true extent of his awesomeness for FAR too long. Also, Arthur gave him a lot of shit for being so repressive with his thoughts/emotions/moods so heâs allowed to be as tactless and snarky as he wants and we love that for him.
- Donât get me wrong, heâs still sweet as Hell to his loved ones and strangers, but once this man decides he doesnât like you then it is roasts 100% all day. Merlin is hella smart and he wonât hesitate to crush a stupid opinion.
- I should mention that the druids are still the only ones who knew the true extent of what Merlin can do (Merlin himself doesnât even know what limits he has). Some fun powers I think Merlin has (I go into more detail in some of them in this set of hcs):
Shape shifting (both into animals and other people)
Time bending (like we see in the show) and time travel
Teleportation
Controlling people (to an extent)
Communing with the dead
Transfiguration
More element bending
- So terrifying BAMF moment #1 is when Merlin is testing some of his abilities. Heâs playing around with transfiguration in the middle of the court bc some nobleman asked him if he could turn a chair into a livestock and now heâs got a small crowd gathered around. Merlin is all like âIâve turned a statue into a dog so this shouldnât be impossibleâ except as he says this he turns ALL the chairs into animals. Not just in the room, but the whole castle... and it wasnât livestock as requested. Nope. They turned into a bunch of predatory animals. Poor Arthurâs throne is now a lion. There are bears, snakes, etc... just chilling around the castle.
- Merlin turns most of them back, but heâs befriended some of them so thereâs a mountain lion (that reminds him of Freya) and owl he keeps. Everyone is terrified, but heâs just like âNo, look! Theyâre nice!â and they are nice... unless Merlin gets annoyed. Then they arenât so nice. People behave VERY well that afternoon.
- Moment #2 is during a battle. Nobody has seen his combat magic yet so itâs a little uncertain on what to expect. Merlin mostly has shown the benevolent magic, but given the chair incident and knowing what heâs done... some people are concerned.
- Motherfuckers were RIGHT to be concerned! He goes full Vanya Hargreeves on their asses. Just a big kaboom. Camelotâs soldiers are untouched, but the other army is completely wiped out. Merlin is out of commission for a solid 1.5 months and Arthur was so freaked out that he threatened to not let Merlin attend another battle if he ever did it again.
- Then there was a series of smaller badass moments. Everyone learned Merlin could teleport when he appeared behind an assassin from freaking nowhere and shanked him, they learned he could time travel (in small doses) when TWO Merlins appeared to help take down some bandits.
- However, part of Merlinâs badassery comes less from the actual magic and more just his... demeanor. Especially when using magic. Sometimes, when heâs bored heâll just let magic crackle across his finger tips. Whenever someone seriously pisses him off the world stops moving... literally (air, water, animals - they all go completely still).
- Rumors have it that magic must have masked his aura b4 because now everyone swears they can FEEL his magic when theyâre around him. One kingdom came to Camelot to declare war, met Merlin, and left after signing a peace treaty.
- Merlin decides heâs gonna learn to fight using a weapon/magic at once. It is awesome as you would expect.
- Visiting nobles never know was to expect...
Noble: So... tell me about this court sorcerer Camelot as acquired.
Gwaine: Merlin? Oh, heâs great! Really nice guy. Very funny.
Noble: Really? Iâve heard he can be... quite... um, temperamental.
Gwaine: Temperamental? Merlin? Nah! I mean, well, he isnât if you donât start anything. He doesnât mess around if someone tries to attack the king or anyone else in the court.
Noble: Doesnât mess around how?
Gwaine: Well, letâs see... oh! It was Gwenâs birthday actually - me and him planned it together, actually. It was really nice - but yeah, somebody came by and tried to stab Leon so Merlin exploded their organs (:
Noble: he...Iâm sorry, he what?
Gwaine: Merlin said it is a good method of killing bc it ensures the person is 100% dead. Heâs a physician so I guess he would know about that stuff (:
Noble: Heâs a physician...? Wow... um, he sounds.... wow....
Gwaine: Literally the nicest guy youâll ever meet
- So, itâs a few years later and magic is becoming more and more integrated into Camelot. Itâs all going well. Nobody fucks with the kingdom bc everyone either loves or is terrified of Merlin.
- Meanwhile. Arthur. His and Merlinâs relationship has changed a lot. Heâs definitely Arthurâs closest advisor and still almost always with him in case of an attack and/or magical expertise is needed... however, he is aware that the world regards Merlin as this inhuman, powerful being and that will NOT do.
Arthur: Hello citizens, I have come to tell you the tale of when the mighty Merlin lost my left shoe for a week
Merlin: why do you do this every time we leave the castle
Arthur: I must remind them of your humble roots.
Merlin: ....Hey. Does anyone want to hear about the time your king got donkey ears?
-Also, a Merlin who has completed his destiny is 100% more reckless than a regular Merlin tbh. His job is done! So what if he drink three different potions at once? He wants to see what it does and Arthur has a hundred other sorcerers to protect him now. The chaotic energy increases at an alarming rate.
- The only reason he isnât off being a wild man in the woods is bc 1) Arthur constantly reminds him he canât shirk his duties as Emrys and 2) he still likes hanging out with his friends
- But there are times where their relationship does a bit of a 180 and Arthur becomes Merlinâs impulse control... also, now that heâs no longer under the crushing weight of his destiny some of the trauma processes.
Merlin: Iâm pretty sure I can blow up the moon
Arthur: why would you even want to do that?
Merlin: that was the moon that turned Freya into the bastet.
Arthur: that was a sorceressâ fault. Not the moon.
Merlin: It taunts me
Arthur: ....donât like half your potions have to be made under a full moon?
Merlin: touchĂŠ
- This chaotic phase does wear off though. Once Merlin discovers most of what his magic can/canât do (he did try to bring someone back to life and instead made a zombie and a very angry ghost) he chills out.
- Still, there are rumors amidst Albion about his wild days.
Merlin: why are people saying I got trapped in a lake?
Arthur: you wanted to see if you could breathe underwater
Merlin: what? I donât remember that
Arthur: you also wanted to see if you could erase your own memory
Merlin: ah... um, okay. Out of curiosity-
Arthur: No, you couldnât breathe underwater... but you also couldnât drown, which as confusing. Clearly, the memory erasing thing worked though.
Merlin: ....why did you let me do half of this stuff?
Arthur: it just seemed easier to let you wear yourself out, honestly. After the wedding-
Merlin: wait. what wedding?
Arthur: ....ours?
Merlin:
Arthur:
Merlin: so. Letâs just pretend like I forgot more than the lake incident-
Arthur: yep, I told you to make a potion or something so would remember everything later.

On Camelot, the base planet of the Albion Intergalactic Alliance, the people have a unique gift where the name of their soulmate appears on their arm. Finding oneâs soulmate could be as easy as taking a shuttle over to the next planet or it could take years for destiny to find its way to their side of the galaxy. Ten years ago, Ambassador Arthur Pendragon found out the name on his arm wasnât from any known language in the galaxy. He hadnât had much faith in love ever since.
Camelot is thriving, and there are no problems on the horizon for once! Gwaine makes a ridiculous suggestion, that turns out to be actually quite a good suggestion.Â
Cue: Shenanigans.
Merlin is Court Sorcerer, Morgana is Court Seer, Arthur is King, and everyone is alive and happy! Just the way we like it!
Camelot was entering a Golden Age, all of Albion soon to follow, but after a few close encounters, a joke suggestion by Gwaine gets taken seriously.
The gang is gathered around the large table (specifically made to seat ten people) in Morganaâs quarters. Dinner has been finished and cleared away, and they sit drinking wine and playing stupid games, laughing all the way.
It had become a tradition, insisted upon by Gwen and Morgana, that the ten of them (five knights, A+M, Morgana, Gwen, Gaius) were to gather for dinner; an evening together with no worries or duties or titles, at least once a month.
Merlin floats a fresh pitcher of wine down the table to Gwaine, eyes glowing happily golden as the air buzzes with magic finally set free, and the offending knight laughs, and speaks loudly:
âYouâve GOT to teach me some of this shit Merlin!-â
Merlin laughs and the rest of the table grins as Gwaine continues:
â-Then I would be able to summon wine everywhere I go! Of course, ladies and gentlemen, I would use my powers for good, protecting King and Country and all that, but mainly, for alcohol related crime.â
The table laughs at that, but Merlin just raises his eyebrow at Morgana. He can see the cogs turning in her head, and the mischievous smirk on her face. Whatever sheâs about to say⌠is going to be said specifically to add fuel to the-
âYou know Merlin, you are a pretty good teacher. Might not be a bad idea to teach the Kingdomâs finest a little bit of sorcery.â
Merlin stares at her disbelievingly, sheâs right, it isnât a bad idea but⌠why did she have to bring it up when everyone was drunk??
Gwaine laughs boisterously, and even Arthur has a wide, daring grin on his face as he looks at Merlin.
Itâs Percivalâs next words however, that thrust the room into shocked silence:
âHmm. Itâs been a while since I practiced, but I would definitely be interested in getting back into it, if you were willing to offer guidance, Merlin.â
The table looks to him in shock, Arthur most of all. He looks at everyone indignantly, a slight blush on his face:
âWhat? You guys know I spent most of my childhood travelling with Druids, right?-â
Everyone shakes their heads dumbly. No. No they had not known that. Percivalâs blush turns even darker, as he mumbles:
âOh. Well it wasnât meant to be a secret or anything-â
He looks up suddenly, seeming just a little panicked:
âI mean, I havenât practiced in years, and certainly not inside Camelot, I swear!â
Merlin looks at him with an unreadable expression on his face, and says, in a completely deadpan tone:
âOh thank the Gods. Donât know what Arthur wouldâve done if he found out one of his closest friends had been practising sorcery for years behind his back, despite the laws against it.â
Percival rolls his eyes at that, and the table begins laughing again, Merlin snorting quietly as Arthur looks at him with a grin (all had been forgiven a long time ago, thankfully. Merlin was unendingly grateful that they had gotten to the point of being able to make jokes about it).
Merlin thought that would be it, that everyone would forget, and it would never be mentioned again. He was Wrong.
A few days later, he was summoned down to the training grounds early in the morning, only to find that the only knights there were the central five and Arthur. Morgana was there as well, a devilish smirk on her face, and Gwen sat on a picnic blanket to the side, a pile of Merlin and Morganaâs sorcery books next to her.
Merlin takes one look at the grin on Gwaineâs face:
