Emma swallowed thickly as she jolted up from a nightmare, paler than usual. The reading boggarts had been assigned for Defense Against the Dark Arts and while none of the accounts had spooked her before, this one apparently had lead to a nightmare. She had never been fond of the idea of losing any of her senses - she almost dreaded it more than anything. Feeling ridiculous, Emma shoved away her own phobias, straightening up in her chair. Breaking eye contact with the passage, she chose to glance around the library instead, cheeks flushing.

Emma lay sprawled out on the empty Quidditch pitch, staring up at the orange and red sky. The sun was setting, a hint that she should be returning to the castle but Emma didn’t consider that. Instead, her parents’ latest letter just kept swirling around in her head, commanding her to reply and acknowledge the engagement. Telling her to be a grown up about the entire thing. Emma knew quite well if she stood up, her entire future would come rushing back at her. Hallowed words, wedded; hollowed words, divorced. A choked laugh escaped her.

Emma kept her back turned to the other girl, one hand tucked under her pillow as she kept her gaze on the wall. For a very brief moment, she wondered if Alecto was asleep - she almost prayed for it but the breathing was wrong. Emma had lived with these girls long enough to know when one of them was asleep.
