Eclipse Meets His Match on Tumblr

It's been a hectic week so apologies for the old photo; but I need to update you guys and replace my pinned posts.

The car is not fixed, BUT - I should have enough money to get it fixed now. Thank you to those who donated!!!! The issue now is just waiting my turn at the dealership's shop. They'll have to take it for a few days because apparently resealing the leaky timing belt cover uses a resin that takes a long time to cure. They're also going to replace the thinning pads on the back two breaks. [The car is a 4-wheel drive.] It's a long drive to take it in, but they'll also let us use the loaner vehicle for free and throw in two free oil changes. Lie also took out a loan with them to pay for the tuneup already so we're not going to start over with someone else.

EMHM Eclipse is cat-coded for sure. But the bull symbolism still has a lot of meaning for him. Specifically the Minotaur because of the monster that was in his mindscape [himself but tangled]. Someone created as a an accident, a mistake. Unloved. Treated like a terrible thing that didn't deserve to exist. Imprisoned before he ever committed a crime and shunned by those that should have been his family. But there's also the sacrificial bull. Expected to die because someone else willed it. And the bull of the cruel bullfighters arena. Jabbed and taunted until he reacts violently and then his death is a spectacle to be cheered at. Someone who can be peaceful if treated with care. I guess I could stretch the metaphor to a pun about mechanical bulls as well. You need a certain kind of tenacity and ability to roll with punches to ride one for very long. The crescent horns are a lunar symbol, but there are Apis bulls of the sun as well. That carry the solar disk between their horns.

Anyone entering Eclipse's mindscape seems to take on a fleshy, amphibian, almost starfish-like look and texture, and just beneath them is the sprawling labyrinth of the backrooms. Thought they'd fit really well for Mermay, I'm glad I just about managed to finish these in time!!!!

The way that Paul Kidby draws things associated with the Death of the Discworld. He maintains the original description of his household as being everything black on black and then edges it with just the barest violet-blue to indicate supernatural things are afoot. But it’s an effect I’ve used in my own paintings as well. The black-white monochrome plus that one color is so nice to look at. And it bounces the bits of yellow on Eclipse and makes them glow even more. I can FEEL the dangerous teetering on that edge too.

Poor sun looks so confused hanging there. <3 like I could give him a little push and he’d just sort of spin like when a mama otter fluffs up a baby and leaves them floating. XD

The texture on Eclipse’s rays is so so nice. It looks rubbery and perfect. His reaction to shedding that water is also spot on. And his pinch-an-inch. Poor thing is not used to having a little fat.<3

The spikiness on the backs of their arms and calves was a good choice. I like Creature from the Black Lagoon feel.
