ON HAWCAINE. hawcaine infirmary and medical research center         is the aseptic eden, the sterile kingdom in which our black devil dwells.     originally a dilapidated vessel for a failing pharmaceutical company,  german plastic surgeon dr. phoenix h. kalverson purchased the property and some adjacent land for a meager $400,000 in the scathing summer of 1983. in the brevity of a subsequent twenty-five minutes, that modern ruin had been deigned an identity:          it would be called hawcaine after his beloved grandfather.       the young fool insisted.        now worth over $2.8 billion,          hawcaine infirmary and medical research center       is one of the most technologically and scientifically advanced facilities in the world. it houses 2,899 beds and currently employs over 19,000 people. the company spans to over 9 countries internationally, but is proudly headquartered in new york city. it is the leading facility in neurosurgery and has earned 263 acclaimed awards over its thirty-nine year life span.     it’s functioning chairman, dr. phoenix h. kalverson, supervises the company alongside leading ceo, dr. embrosyn l. vallieré.

ON REPUTATION. both well-respected and veritably controversial,        our beloved doctor bears a most-peculiar state of renown.    having proved himself with an impenetrable work-ethic and natural aptitude during his residency, vallieré has since worked tirelessly to hone his status as a brilliant and gifted physician in a fiercely censorious community of greying pedagogues.      he went on to become one of the youngest neurosurgeons in the country, operating independently at only twenty-six years of age. a year later, he would earn the prestigious title of hawcaine’s chief of surgery.      but his great successes were not without the dark shadows of criticism.       the furtive lips of hospital personnel began to whisper of his harsh and ‘unethical’ apathy; they claimed his patient method was unorthodox, for he was not a tender carer by any means and in vicious pursuit of medical solutions, sacrificed compassion for progression           (his general reputation as a surgeon i base heavily off of dr. emil j. freireich, whose courageous story was featured in malcolm gladwell’s david & goliath, and whose scalpel sharp logic, high-intellect, and naked-truth approach helped move the needle for childhood leukemia).                  a mere four years into his tenure as chief of surgery,         vallieré acceded to the title of chief executive officer.           although he no longer functions as a surgeon, vallieré is still referenced in various medical journals and is frequently called-upon to supervise and advise surgeons regarding a range of operating procedures.      he maintains his prominence as an incredible medical mind and titan of the industry.

MISCELLANEOUS TRIVIA.

embron is human, irrefutably human    (it is a part of his pain and his everlasting ennui), and will never be inhuman enough to possess any sort of especially remarkable or supernatural ability.      this stands true in all verses of mine.      functioning, however, within the realm of human possibility,     his physique is impressive.    embron is large, brawny,  and incredibly strong.

his gifted ability pertains, really, to human genius.    his intelligence is well-above exceedingly exceptional and embron is what may largely be considered brilliant.     his propensity for piano-playing as a child gave him an ambidextrous ability that only aided in his deftness as the country’s youngest neurosurgeon.

on the note of ability,      a turbulent, delinquent youth gave way to a strange masochistic tendency.    embron’s pain tolerance is high, very high, and he demonstrates a strange impassivity while he is actively wounded or hurting.    

a fascinating effect of embron’s classical training is his complete equanimity in the midst of utter chaos.      i liken the sensation to a natural high or mental zone;     by way of pandemonium, embron becomes imbued with a sense of solace he does not otherwise feel in day-to-day life.      surrounded by panic and faced down by chaos,    he thrives on a perfect calm.     

embron has a terrible sweet tooth.

the doctor is a notable insomniac,     only sleeping for a handful of hours every few days.      he frequently suffers night-terrors that arrive in the form of flashbacks to his violent and tragic childhood.

embron cannot swim.        he dislikes open water and is somewhat hydrophobic.

largely due to his neurodegenerative condition, he is constantly cold; his skin is almost always abnormally frigid.      he will constantly complain about the temperature and smokes avidly to generate and feel heat.   his disease plagues him with constant migraines.

a good gardener and something of a green-thumb, as inherited from his mother.    he’s especially fond of the rose flower, her favorite.     decently and surprisingly knowledgeable in botany.

rather humble despite his ostensible arrogance, which pertains only to his skill as a surgeon.    he is not ostentatious about money, although he has upheld his millionaire status for some time now.

his promiscuity as a young man quite literally exhausted him.     vulgarity has become boring.        resents his own innate sexual urges.     seeks shallow one night stands only to sate what he sees as a bothersome instinct.

a notorious workaholic whose work-ethic is not only unparalleled, but deserving of some admonishment.

will only drink various types of whiskey, served neat.

has a penchant for pretty blondes.

The elevator had been empty, the descent agonizing. The bowels of Hawcaine churned with life, urgency, regret, death, hopelessness, compassion while the brain, the lungs, the fingers fell quiet with the coming of night; emails from the emergency department kept illuminating his phone from the mouth of his briefcase while executives slept soundly. The air was cool with the coming of autumn, crisp, vaguely gelid; sirens wailed in tandem with the wind. The street hummed, the city breathed. He was tired, plagued by an exhaustion that weighed heavy on the soul [his briefcase was like concrete in his giant fist].

He turned one corner, two or was it three now? and his thumb moved faster than his mind over the screen of his phone, restless, fidgeting, furious, fastidious; oxfords moved one foot in front of the other, heel to toe, mind reeling and then a thud, one less-confronting than the others. The silence was fraudulent; her heartbeat was louder than ever in his head.
