New Horizons Direct...
Spoilers for those who haven't seen the new Nintendo Direct regarding New Horizons.
Obviously there's still some stuff in the game that I think deserves some sort of update (crafting multiples of an item at once, better system to buy items than just 1 or 5, etc).
But they're adding a ton of stuff in the 2.0 update that looks really awesome. The Roost seems like it'll just be a hangout spot rather than a place to work like in New Leaf, but considering some of the other stuff being added in for free (cooking, Kapp'n, even a lil stretching mini game, gyroids), I really don't think it's that big of a deal. There's a good amount of stuff being added, both in this free update and the paid DLC that I may get, that I'll have to rethink my island/home design a little bit to fit stuff in.
Even if this truly is the last major free update, they've been giving free stuff for almost 2 years, and this update is huge. And even the paid DLC doesn't seem priced too high, and that looks like it'll add a ton more replay value for people (plus extra stuff to design their island with like pillars and such).
I know there are going to be people complaining about this update still (like such and such should have been in the game from the start, it took too long, they promised free updates and now this is the last (major) one, etc), but come on. As fun as New Leaf was, eventually it was the same thing when you play it every day, and we were younger when we played those old favorite AC games. I'm sure they wouldn't hold up if we tried playing them for the first time today any better than New Horizons did. That isn't to say New Horizons is perfect because it certainly isn't, but I definitely think a lot of people look back on previous games with some rose tinted glasses.
I finally completed my bug and fish sections of the Critterpedia. The only thing I have left is a deep sea creature that comes in November.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the ultimate customization game, allowing you to personalize your dream home with a wide variety of furniture and decorations.

Four of the more important map screenshots I took over the past year.
My initial island look, more or less. I terraformed the back end a little.
A month in I had reworked the river system, began building a residents area in the back right, and got my museum area setup.
November is not long after I got back into the game and got a decent setup for my island. Nice and grid-like, little residents area, the museum had space for displays. Alas, I wasn’t satisfied.
Current. Love this island design so much more. Some nice symmetry with a little asymmetry thrown in. The front end below the rivers is my ‘wild’/nature area, and the area above the river is the more settled area.
Can’t believe it’s been a year since this game came out. I took a little hiatus for about 5 months, but now my island has been back on track. Hope everyone else who has had the game since launch is still having fun, and that the newcomers are, too!
Nearly a year later, after a 5 month hiatus because the prospect of designing my island became way too much, Ember Isle has achieved a 5 star rating.
“Wouldn’t it be funny if I have a 5 star rating after placing down a soccer goal and like ten campfires?”
Thank you all to have followed my blog over the course of the last ~year. I took a long hiatus from the game for 5 months due to being overwhelmed by designing the island, but have since gotten back into it. I may still post infrequently, but hopefully 2021 ends up going better overall than 2020. Happy New Year from Ember Isle!

A somber, but happy new year.
Let’s all blaze into the new year together!
I haven’t posted original content in a long time, but I finally got back into playing the game a couple months ago after a 5 month hiatus and I wanted to show an update of my island since the game first came out. The last photo is as of December 2020, and I’m overall A LOT happier with the design than previous attempts.
It took completely tearing down the island and building it back up from scratch (minus some areas I knew I would need a certain level for). I’m going more for an ATLA vibe now if it wasn’t apparent by the main river down the middle.
Merry Christmas from Ember Isle!
