ii. background & personality
alaric stark was born during the cruelest winter the north had seen in since the dance of the dragons, beneath skies so pale they seemed to be carved from ice itself. before his first wails, he was already expected to carry to weight of two dying dynasties: the fading glory of the north and the smoldering remnants of house targaryen.
tall and striking, alaric bears an unsettling face uncommon among the starks that came before him. those in the north remarked that he bore a strange semblance to his mother, princess jaehaera and the targaryen’s that she descended from, especially the lilac lined eyes like a ghost of old valyria. he was not what the north expected of their future lord.
unlike his grandsire cregan, who mere presence filled halls like thunder, alaric was dutiful in his silence. he speaks little, but listens often: every whisper analyzed and carefully evaluated. alaric remembers it all. he remembers the war that he was sent off to fight at the age of just one and twenty. he remembers the killing blow to his father in the dornish desert. he remembers the look upon the faces of northerners as he returned north, the bellyaching moans of all those around him as they suffered when famine took over his home. he remembers it every single moment of their suffering. and it only has sparked a flame that cannot be put out
the crown abandoned the north in the years following that war, never mind the young men and lords that fought for the selfish conquest of a small king who desired too much. while children starved and villages froze, their king and prince sought out glory. although cregan forbade any talks of rebellion or thoughts of treason, it didn’t stop it from taking ahold within alaric.
now that his grandsire has passed, alaric has become the ruling lord stark and it is up to him to decide if house stark stays dormant under the tyranny of what house targaryen has become or take their fate back into their own hands.
iii. headcanons
his mother was a very influential figure in his childhood: she sang songs and stories of ancient valyria, of the dragons that often plagued his dreams and of queen rhaenyra and how the terrible beauty of power could darken any soul, no matter how noble.
alaric was always fascinated with the dragon egg that his mother brought to winterfell. he often prayed to the old gods to will it back to life after being dormant for so long and as a child would swear he could feel movement under its shell but was often told it was a fantasy.
although he was the heir, alaric never rushed into a betrothal as most around him thought cregan would outlive all his grandchildren. instead, alaric considers him lucky, to have found lady roslyn arryn, a cousin to the ruling lord when she arrived in the north to help with the famine that plagued his lands. it was a quiet love (even if she has never been one to keep silent), one that grew from respect and admiration. although alaric felt tenderness for her, he worried that cregan would find the alliance not strong enough or benefitting the north enough. eventually, they would marry.
