just watched “the music room” by satyajit ray, i’m completely floored!
the control and detail satyajit ray has is truly otherworldly and so is the incredibly restrained and quiet performance by chhabi biswas, i honestly think it might be one of the best performance i’ve ever seen from a male actor (weirdly reminds me of isabelle huppert in “the piano teacher”) that last scene with all the candles and we see this man finally crack, it is the end of the world, it is the complete and utter loss of everything for biswambhar roy, and ray and biswas play this film with absolutely no melodrama, so the melancholia that invades every scene of this film is as realistic (and transfixing) as it is emotionally shattering… futile decadence and obsession vs. arrogant modernity, nobody wins here.
all that is left is a chandler swinging in the dark.
just watched s2x17 of supernatural (“heart”)… why am i absolutely gagged by the acting and story of this episode??? like i already enjoy supernatural for being a show that is lowkey so melodramatic and reminds me of other cheesy teen tv shows i used to love (pretty little liars, teen wolf, etc) but there are certain moments within the show that make me realize “oh this is actually a really thematically interesting piece of television, i get why people absolutely adore this show” this was one of those moments, cause of course i find the brothers relationship to masculinity and femininity under patriarchy really interesting (i literally wrote an entire essay on it basically if you scroll down on my page) along with the show’s relationship to female characters (and how they are so often brutalized within the show, stemming from the deep seated misogyny of the writers and unpacking that as a viewer) but i also find episodes like “heart” really interesting because of how it plays into a character’s arc, specifically sam.
the way his entire character this season is desperate to save people, because just maybe that is the one thing that can save him, that can make him “clean” again but instead he is surrounded by endless suffering of the people he tries to save, and in this episode he is literally forced to kill his narrative mirror (madison), that sam has the capacity to do the thing that dean could never possibly do to him, and instead dean cries for his brother, seeing how sam is burning alive internally and there is nothing he can do to heal or protect that wound in sam that remains eternally, and it’s even more gut wrenching knowing madison (just like so many other women in this show) was doomed the moment she met these winchester men, the writing and editing of this episode is just heartbreaking but also really well done.
along with the acting, that last scene between ackles and padalecki was some of the best acting i’ve seen on this show so far! they hit every emotional beat while also making it incredibly clear to the audience how nuanced this moment is for the two brothers and madison (because of the reasons stated above) i feel like i’ve seen a lot of comments slightly ragging on the acting of this show (particularly padalecki) and though i wasn’t expecting like the most incredible performances in the world from this show when i first started (because I get it, shows like these don’t usually have the best track record lol) im pleasantly surprised by how well the two leads sell these emotionally intense moments without it feeling laughable or overdone, it makes for some really dramatic (at times melodramatic) and compelling television that Ive missed watching!! it also helps that ackles and padalecki are quintessential 2000s heartthrobs cause who doesn’t like a bit of eye candy 🧘🏽♀️ (sorry simple pleasures!)
when charli wrote “i can take you to heaven like it’s 2007” she wrote that for me actually! 💁🏽♀️
i lowkey just spent an absurd amount of time logging all the restaurants i could think of on beli… im already at 113 please don’t stop me now!!!
this was in fact my fit for “the odyssey”…
like yes i know no one in ancient greece was wearing sailor dresses butttt i also thought “oh they’re on a boat for the majority of it so this work!” of course it did not work, it’s actually hilarious how jarringly different all my friends and i’s outfits were! (but i adore this dress and the sailor hat it makes me feel like ldshadowlady which heals my inner child and shadowcadet heart 🙇🏽♀️💗 #beenashadowcadetfor13years)

as much as i appreciate pta’s films (imo “the master” should have been his best picture win) and absolutely love how complex of a character perfida beverly hills is (i loveee women who are “bad moms”. women who are endlessly wanting, women who will use academic language to validate blowing up their own lives, women who leave, women desperate to get the fuck out of here, women who are destined and desperate to do big things, etc. i loveee these complicated women because i think in some capacity i relate to them!) and i don’t think teyana taylor was given enough praise for incredible she was in the film, you feel her presence haunting the narrative for the rest of the run time and i absolutely adored that so so much!
buttttt i was also thinking about how deeply emotional “sinners” was and i also don’t think that film was given enough love and appreciation during awards season (and the lead up to it). “sinners” was such a masterclass in filmmaking, of course pta has an immense presence behind the camera and you feel that influence his filmmaking, you feel him entirely and all his emotions, that’s why I love his films! but with “sinners” you could feel ryan coogler’s soul be poured into that film in every aspect - the score is soo deeply intimate and so is the dreamy cinematography, the main cast is so incredible and deeply underrated, every scene is so deliberate. it’s a film that you feel so viscerally and physically, the sweat, the dust, the people and touches. and that last scene, so bittersweet so much longing and beauty. as much as i appreciate and loved “one battle after another”, “sinners” will ultimately be in my heart as a “best picture” winner as well!!
(also dare i say i think coogler is everything nolan isn’t, like coogler could do “the odyssey” but nolan could NEVER make “sinners” it’s the emotional dissonance!!)
two a.m. eating a red velvet cupcake over the sink in the darkness because all adventurous women do,
you know the american government has run out of cards to play now because they’re using red scare propaganda AGAIN (this is just McCarthyism 3.0)
the american right attacking communists constantly is unbelievably pathetic because what’s the alternative?? work all our lives to make a profit for epstein and his friends or support climate collapse for oil companies sake?? of course everyone would rather own the means of production than be controlled by predatory and violent billionaires!!
had a beautiful day in seattle with my beautiful friends, got cupcake royale and lunch at snappy dragon, chatted about existential dread and how beautiful it is to be alive together! i love my beautiful cupcake friends and can’t wait to do it all again next wednesday 🧁💗

i just know in my heart sam winchester loved kendrick lamar (no im not taking questions on this)
was thinking about when my friend and i were discussing how neither of our father’s congratulated us on getting into nyu (me) or ucla (her) and instead either lectured us or laughed in our faces about how expensive the schools were… all that replays in my head is “favorite daughter” by lorde when i think of how quickly our father’s indifference tainted such joyful memories of us finally seeing all that hard work pay off… oh well.
