From the Field to the Plate is a platform promoting knowledge and change. Knowledge about an everyday activity on a collective scale has incredible significance. There is more to what we put on our plate than the food we eat.

From the Food to the Plate concept design.  This is my project 3 for Data Visualization and is a look into food channels in a visually engaging interface.

For the next project interactivity and engagement are the focus.  I am being inspired by Marion Luttenberger’s work.  I’m going to try to include the physicalness of the food with whatever I design.

My completed infographic for my data visualization class project: A Day Without.  I chose to focus on food waste because it is an overlooked issue that is having a huge impact on the environment and society.

Grids are powerful things.  I’m glad I have finally finished editing the photos I took yesterday and Saturday.  

On the top is the misleading and poorly made graph about the average cost of graph.  It should be noted that the x axis uses a wide range of variables: last year, last week, and current.  Since there was no date I was unable to use that particular year, instead I focused on a single day: August 20 over an entire decade.  The graph below shows how there has been an increase in the average price of gas between 2002 and 2012.  Showing data over a decade or other significant periods of time allows the data to be more understandable.

I was interested in examining the relationship between intentional homicide, murder rate and the total population of those countries.  I used the ten countries with the highest murder count (left to right in the first graph).  I then compared the murder rate, which is the intentional homicide rate per year per 100,000 inhabitants.  My final graph is the total population of those ten countries.

I’ve decided for my next class project I will be doing my research on a day without men in the United States.  I will be focusing on daily statics of domestic violence, rape, and murder, as well as, what the political and social aspects would look like.  This project will be a way to visualize the very real problems facing women in the US.

It is such a relief to have a solid plan now!
