THE DECAPITATION OF MACBETH
“Women have no choice but to be decapitated, and in any case the moral is that if they don’t actually lose their heads by the sword, they only keep them on the condition that they lose them--lose them, that is, to complete silence, turned into automatons” ( Hélene Cixous, “Castration or Decapitation)
In the tradition of the Sundanese wayang golek (wooden puppet) and the Javanese wayang kulit (shadow puppet), the dalang, or puppetmaster, is the Father that creates and rules the universe. In this universe Macbeth is is caught in the gravitational fields of the masculine and the feminine. Her rebellion against the Father causes the death of her feminine self, and finds that the severed head she has been holding is her own. She is in the end a man. He has victoriously defeated and beheaded himself.
