family.
naomi zhong-abernathy (jackie chung); 44 years old. single mom.
not much is known about naomiโs past. itโs not something that she would be open about, especially with her daughter. she has to put on a front, that she isnโt dealing with the demons of her past. as much as naomi loves her own family, she isnโt close to them, at all. as hard as she tried, naomi could never live up to her familyโs expectations of settling down, getting married, and having a huge family of her own. it was something naomi never imagined for herself. and when she tried? he left before eloise was born. naomi realized that her and eloise would be better off on their own - living without expectations. or so she thought.
unknown father (colin ferguson): 48 years old. unknown.
naomi married eloiseโs father when they were young - naomi was 23 years old while he was 27. he never really wanted to commit to having a family. so, with the first possible chance he got, he ran away from it all - leaving naomi and her child. naomi has never mentioned her father, and eloise has never dared to ask. it was an unspoken rule in their house. they had gone 20 years without him, why would they feel the need to bring it up, now? part of eloise always wishes sheย knewย her dad. to know the other half of what couldโve been her life. however, she loves her relationship with her mom - itโs not something that she would give up for the chance to know her father.
character trope.
growing up in a small town with an adored mother, it was hard for eloise to not be loved by people she had never met before. her mother struggled financially in eloise's early years, going to her coworkers and neighbors to help take care of eloise. it was often that eloise would be taken into work with naomi abernathy, earning coo's and aw's from the town's population. eloise is the town sweetheart, the 'could do no wrong', the stellar student, the amazing athlete. she's the one you can count on to help you with your homework, the one you can count on to help an elderly lady cross the street, the one you can count on to always tell the truth.. right?
eloise.
it was almost always eloise and her mom. they were always with each other. to the store, to work, at basketball games, anywhere and everywhere. she was her mother's only child - her prized possession.
they had anything they could ever need within each other. it didn't matter that they weren't rich, or that they didn't have the nicest of materials. truthfully, eloise never really cared about diamonds or designer clothes. she was genuinely just herself - with thrifted clothes and a book in her hand. eloise was adored no matter what.
eloise felt like the world was sitting easily on her shoulders, that it revolved around her. it didnโt help that she was the star of several athletic teams, had top tier grades, and seemed to just glide right through high school.
she consistently needed to be right, to be liked, to be the best. something inside of her knew that she belonged at ogden. she didnโt need to go half-way across the country to go to school. she had all that she needed: a town that adored her, beaming college recommendations. what else could she need?
eloise received an athletic scholarship when she got into ogden. eloise probably would have been able to glide through ogden without the scholarship, but she knew her mom would be scrapping change in order to pay for it. with the scholarship, it was one last thing her mom had to pay for.
eloise hadn't been so self conscious until she arrived at ogden. with people who had more money than she could dream of, who had better style, better friends, better everything. she chose to hide away the parts about her that she had never thought of before. she would try to make her clothes look expensive, perfect posture, lies rolling off her tongue about how she grew up. little white lies couldn't hurt her. she has not openly admitted to receiving an athletic scholarship, but it's not exactly a secret either.
greer morrison.
meeting greer was the origin of her downfall. eloise had never met anyone like her - so much more adored and respected by all. eloise could only dream of what greer had. it filled eloise with a rage. she couldn't believe that someone could be so much more adored than her, and she wanted everything that greer had. she wanted to be as liked as her, as adored, as respected, as high on the social pyramid as her. it filled her thoughts, and soon, eloise was obsessing over what she could do to be more like her. the need to grow to the top, to soar above the rest. the desire to be liked by her, to be liked by the entire student body filled every ounce of her body. all eloise knew, from that point on, was that she would do anything and everything to be just like her. even joined in on tennis to try and get closer to greer. ended up enjoying tennis, but still.
