This is a snip-it of a larger piece.
When Peter made his way to the official Avengerâs tower, it wasnât a surprise to be greeted by Tony, Steve, and Bruce in the lobby. His leg was still sore and would be for the next few days, but thanks to Deadpoolâs stitching (surprisingly neat and medically trained stitching) the skin was already starting to heal itself. Honestly, what Peter needed most in that moment was some painkillers.
âPeter!â Tonyâs shout was paired with a surprising hug from the billionaire. Peter stumbled back and only winced slightly He had changed into his street clothes after stopping at his apartment really quick and the harsh jean fabric rubbed awkwardly against his makeshift bandage of some gauze and medical tape. Tony pulled back at the sound of Peterâs wince. He looked like he wanted to say something, but Steve came over quick and gripped Tonyâs shoulder.
âBruce, would you mind taking Peter up to medical? Iâm sure some painkillers and a change in bandage would suffice,â he said sweetly and gave Peterâs shoulder a caring squeeze as Peter limped to follow Bruce to the elevator. Steve turned to Tony.
âHe was shot!â Tony whispered angrily. âDonât you dare tell me to calm down when Spiderman was just shot under my watch!â His nostrils flared and Steve gripped Tonyâs shoulder to make him face the blonde.
âPeter is fine, Tony.â Steve said lowly. âHe wasnât on your watch. This isnât your fault. There are dangers and risks to being a hero; you know that.â
âI should take the suit away again.â Tony decided. âHe deactivated every single safety protocol I installed. How?! I made them triple hack proof. Friday couldnât even hack it! Clearly he doesnât understand the importance of any of this if he thinksââ Steve shook Tony slightly and placed a finger to his lips. Tony huffed out a breath but stopped talking.
âYou know better than anyone that Peter is brilliant. Didnât you just say to me yesterday that he reminds you of yourself at his age? And no, youâre not going to take the suit away.â Tony looked like he wanted to interrupt but Steve shook his head. âNo, you wonât. Because the last time you did that, he went headfirst into enemy lines and nearly died without any protection. We are going to go upstairs, and talk to himâlisten to himâbefore making and decisions. Clear?â Steve asked as if he were talking to a child. Tony clicked his tongue.
âI hate it when you treat me like a child.â Tony muttered, turning and heading for the elevator. Steve placed a kiss on Tonyâs hairline and wrapped his hand into Tonyâs.
âI know,â he whispered, smugly. Tony rolled his eyes.
âIâm still lecturing him, though.â He muttered. âDamn kid is gonna give me gray hairs.â He puffed as the doors closed.
Steve and Tony found Peter and Bruce in the medical floor of the tower. Peter was sitting on an exam bed with his pants off and Bruce stood over him, typing on his tablet with the bullet wound on full display.
ââdid a good job. You said the bullet was still in you? Iâm glad whoever helped was smart enough to notice no exit wound.â Bruce was talking to Peter and Peter was nodding along. They stopped talking, though, when Peter caught sight of Tony and Steve. He looked down in guilt.
âWhatâs the update, doc?â Tony asked Bruce. Bruce handed Tony the tablet as the billionaire looked through it, humming every few seconds in distaste before focusing on Peter.
âYouâre an idiot.â He snapped. Peter opened his mouth to grunt out an offended sound and moved to defend himself but Tony held up his hand.
âNo, itâs my turn to speak right now.â He said and God, this felt like Vulture all over again. âItâs one thing to get injured in a fight. It happens all the time, really. No big deal.â Tony shrugged. âBut this?â He waved the tablet over Peterâs body and bullet wound. âThis is a big deal because sure you got shot in battle, defending the innocent, but instead of doing as youâre told and letting Karen send the emergency alert to Friday so we could help, you go and override not just the emergency protocols, but all the protocols!â Tony was shouting now.
âDid you know thereâs an emergency protocol to filter your air when an untraceable gas is emitted into the air? What happens if a bad guy comes and shoots out some poisonous gas thatâs odorless and colorless? Now, the oxygen filter is only accessible by voice command and you canât command it if youâre dead!â Peter flinched at Tonyâs outburst. Bruce was looking down at his feet and Steve was watching in sorrow. Peter looked down. Fuck, he screwed up.
âI-I didnâtââ Peter tried thinking of what to say to fix the situation, but nothing came to mind. He fucked up.
âNo, you did. Thatâs the problem.â Tony said. âYou did hack into my suit to take out your last line of defense. You did go against what I said about laying low and get yourself shot. And you did prove exactly my point; youâre not ready to be an Avenger.â Peter spasmed as if he were slapped.
âTonyââ Steve took a step forward.
âNo, we agreed I wonât take the suit away, but I need to know exactly what was going through your head when you dismantled my safety protocols and when you decided that team-ups with Deadpool were suddenly okay!â Tony said sternly. Peter sighed and cast his eyes downward.
âI hacked into the suit for the first time a few weeks back. I like learning about the suit and Karen only knows so much so I got in the habit of taking it a part and seeing how it works,â Peter ignored Tonyâs grunt of disapproval, âa few weeks ago, I noticed you had some more child-lock protocols in place. Karen said I would hardly notice them and should leave them in place, butââ Peter paused, âafter our talk the other day, I was just so sick of being treated like a kid! I donât need child-locks or monitors to keep me in check! Iâm twenty years old, Iâve been doing this for six years!â Peter exploded. âI figured if I barely noticed they were on, I wouldnât notice they were off. After a fight with a mugger, I realized the protocols I busted were the ones that had a direct line with Friday. They were surveillance protocols.â Peter bit out. âIâm not a child and I donât need to be watched 24/7!â
âThey werenât in place to watch you, Peter, they were in place to alert me if, oh I donât know, you got shot and needed medical attention!â Tony yelled.
âIâm fine, arenât I?â Peter yelled back. He was sick of this. Why canât Tony see that while he was in a dangerous position last night, heâs fine and could handle it?!
âBarely!â Tony shot back. âWho knows what happened with Deadpool!â He growled. Peter glared.
âHeâs the one who helped me, actually.â Peter grunted. âHe took the bullet out and stitched me up. He let me crash at his place and everything!â Peter yelled. Tony paused and Peter got the distinct feeling that that was the wrong thing to say.
âYou were with Deadpool all morning?!â He shouted. Peter groaned in frustration.
âWe had this conversation!â Tony all but shouted exasperatedly. âDeadpool is a bad guy. I donât care what you think you know about him; you donât know him. Heâs a psychotic killer!â
âHeâs not that bad, you know!â Peter interrupted. He knew, logically, that getting into a screaming match with Tony Stark would just end in someone storming off and words being spit just for hurtâs sake. It was a mistake, essentially. But Peter didnât care.
ââNot that badâ?â Tony scoffed. Steve had a look of concern on his face, almost certain that this was going to end badly but not knowing how to stop it. âHeâs killed probably more people than the Avengers saved! Heâs unhinged and unstable. Thereâs a reason we donât work with him and thereâs a reason he isnât an Avenger, Peter.â Tony said sternly. Peter practically growled.
âThere you go again, dangling that around!â Peter bit, suddenly losing sight of Deadpool in the argument and focusing in on Tonyâs words. âYou keep telling me I donât know what it means to be an Avenger and maybe youâre right, maybe I donât because her I amâa willing participantâand there you are, telling me to fuck off! Screw you! Iâm not some kid you need to shelter from the worldâIâm not your kid!â
âPeterââ Steve tried to intercept from a different angle only to be cut off by a dark laugh from Tony.
âYou wonder why youâre not an Avenger? You canât even see danger when itâs right in front of you. Youâre right, youâre not my kid, but youâre my responsibility. If you want to act like a child, I have no problem treating you like one. Friday, initiate âtimeoutâ protocol.â Tony said impartially. Peter glared at him.
âWhat is âtimeoutâ protocol?â He gritted out. Steve shook his head in disappointment.
âTony, I told you not to take awayââ
âIâm not,â Tony said in his cool and collected tone of indifference, âthis is one of the protocols that Karen isnât even cleared to know about, therefore, you canât disable it. You can keep the suit, but it wonât turn on until I say so. You want to act like a child? Great, go to your room.â Tony snapped. Peter glared with a fury he didnât know he was capable of possessing. His skin boiled and his heart drummed in his ears.
Without a word, Peter stood up, ignoring the pain in his leg and Bruceâs petitions to sit back down. Peter stepped up into Tonyâs space and glared.
âI donât know why you canât trust me to make my own decisions, but fuck you.â
Peter hobbled out of the room and to the elevators. He wasnât too worried about his leg; like Bruce said, Wade did a good job stitching him up and the wound would probably be closed by tomorrow morning anyway.
âMr. Parker, I am under authority to try and redirect you back to the medical wing or to your room,â Fridayâs voice carried through the halls just outside the elevator.
âAre you really going to make me take the stairs?â Peter asked. He just wanted to go home. There was silence for a few moments until the doors swung open and Peter stepped inside.
