That's such an honour omg! Maybe idk...I would really have to re-read everything again, it's been so long and I lost all my notes. I also think I pretty much covered every nook and cranny of the series minus the new chapters.

I had my reasons. I just wanted to come back and make some clarifications and also just see how everyone was doing.

Trigger Warning: Mentions of Pedophilia, SA and other sensitive content

Hello again,

I spent the last day reading over my posts, and to my surprise I saw that many people are still interacting with them. I thought I would clarify my stances on some more sensitive topics, since I noticed in some posts my wording could have been better. The message was clear, but it was obvious to me reading back that all the exhaustion from working and going to school impeded my ability to convey myself properly.

I will keep it short, as many posts detail this further.

Here are the perspectives discussed in this blog:

Pedophilic/SA content (stance): Previous content was inexcusable and used shock ‘humour’ inappropriately, poorly using pedophilic undertones and SA. Even though the characterization has changed for well over a decade, it is valid for people to not want to support the series. It is also valid for some people to support the author now since they have clearly learned from how harmful these characterizations were and how they normalized sensitive topics. I put ‘humour’ under quotes since it is not humour. This ‘humour’ harmed many people and contributed to the perpetuation of harmful ‘jokes.’ It’s not okay.

Racism/ Imperialism: Hetalia was always anti-war and anti-racism. I have several posts detailing this, including an academic article that also supports this stance. There are also no races in this series. The author did this strategically to avoid arguments on race.

White-washing: It is hard to ignore that many characters’ skin tones are lighter than they should be.

Stereotypes: Because the nations are based on stereotypes, they will not always be accurate. This is especially in regard to appearance. For example, America is stereotyped for having blond hair and blue eyes (the American dream). However, others have characterized him in the fandom of being of African-American descent, which is also accurate culturally. The fandom is a great place for creators to work around the stereotypes and include more accurate cultural and ethnic details instead of being stuck with the author’s templates. Due to the genre of stereotypes, the series cannot really accomplish the latter.

One more small note: When addressing SA in the series I incorrectly stated that “stripping people”, which France’s older characterization did, was not SA but rather had sexual undertones. I did, however, mention that many of France's other actions were SA. It was a small comment in a post, but this needs to be addressed.

This is not correct at all, and I apologize for my ignorance. THIS IS SA. Any form of harassment is violence. Unfortunately, this has happened to me many times before and I was gaslighted into believing that it wasn’t. I have since learned and educated myself.

Hi guys, I hope everyone is doing well. I promise to keep this very brief. First off, I am terribly sorry for being absent for so long with no explanation. I think I have a good reason, and while I know it’s not necessary to tell you guys everything, I feel like I have to.

In July, both mine and Mathew’s life was threatened by someone in my immediate family. I had to move abruptly for the safety of my Dad, whom I was living with at the time. I moved in with Mathew (my bf), which while was extremely risky and so quick into our relationship, I didn’t have the means to live on my own.

Unfortunately, I didn’t have much luck as my laptop died right after and I lost ALL my posts that I have created for this blog, including my notes on the manga and other canon-related material. It broke my heart so bad that I couldn’t even log onto the blog without feeling miserable. I felt uninspired and didn’t want to post because I knew that they wouldn’t be the quality that I wanted them to be.

Another thing that held me back was that every time I tried to log on, I kept having flashbacks to writing posts in the back of the moving truck. I can’t even log onto this blog now without all these feelings rushing back to me.

It’s the exact reason why I stopped writing stories on FF.net.

Every time I tried to write, I kept remembering how my stepdad used to mentally torture me, literally doing anything to make sure that I wouldn’t be able to write my stories in peace (turning the TV up full volume when my mom wasn’t home, cutting off the internet without warning so I lost all my progress etc.).

Things are much better now; however, I am too busy to maintain this blog at the moment. I am currently balancing a government job, a Master’s degree, and a research assistantship that has drained me of all spare time. While I can’t promise that I will come back, I just thought that you guys all deserved to know.

It was truly a pleasure to create for you guys and words cannot capture how grateful I am for all the support I have received. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU. You gave confidence and love to a girl who was told that she wouldn’t amount to anything.

Personally, I’m against having to always justify why you ship a pairing, but if I had to guess, maybe because they’re both like the younger sibling figure. Hong Kong for the Asian nation and Iceland for the Nordics.

Ok, I know Romano feels gloomy after associating with Prussia. Hungary looks to have an immense fear of Romania. The Baltics, and Prussia, also have what looks to be PTSD from their time with Russia. What other nations have a fear of icky feeling being around another? I feel like I'm missing one for some reason, and knowing me I probably am or my OCD is messing with me. **Hungary isn’t scared of Romania. They have a historical rivalry and fight like dogs and monkeys.

Likewise, pretty much everyone gets an ‘icky feeling’ around Belarus, including Russia. Lithuania – who has a crush on her - and Ukraine – her biological sister - are the exceptions.

What happens to the nations when they're killed? Like, I get they can't die unless their country does, but what happens to their body when they die? I remember Chibitalia killing Turkey on a boat and then he ends up back in his country, but how did he get there from the boat?

They can die but regenerate and have abnormal healing powers.

Uh, this is kind of awkward but I just wanted to make a small correction on your post about pedophilia in Hetalia. Children can feel sexual pleasure, and masturbation in children and toddlers is perfectly developmentally normal. I’m not excusing child molestation at ALL, I’m just making a correction to your post (which was very interesting, by the way).

If you read the post again, I don’t link it back to the dub. The rumour was that apparently someone heard Himaruya say that England has a crush on America even though no one has seen Himaruya haha.

The following post aims to disprove the misconception that Denmark is selfish. This understanding of his character likely stems from a viking stereotype (i.e., pillaging and destroying without compassion for others). While Hetalia is based on stereotypes, this is one that Himaruya did not decide to work into Denmark’s character.

As I will discuss later, Denmark’s viking period is instead characterized as wild, not selfish. He is stated to have calmed down since, but what most fans overlook is that even during this period, Denmark was always compassionate to those close to him.

That said, let’s breakdown this misconception.

He was oblivious, not selfish:

As mentioned, during the peak of his empire, Denmark’s ambitions to conquer came at the consequences of others. But rather than him being aware of them, Himaruya decided to portray him as dense.

Ex: When asked by his king to increase taxes on Norwegians, Denmark visits Norway. When he sees how worn-down Norway’s house is, Denmark starts crying and apologizing. The running theme throughout this is that Denmark is ambitious and power hungry – as many other nations are during their peak -  but nonetheless feels a great amount of loyalty, obligation, and responsibility to those under him. Seeing Norway’s state of living was a much-needed wake-up call for him.

Essentially, he’s dense with a big heart.

Egotistical, not selfish:

Fans also tend to misinterpret Denmark’s egotism as selfishness, which isn’t the case. This is intended to be a comedic aspect of his character as shown by the art style in which Denmark’s gloating is depicted. The only person who thinks Denmark is as cool as he portrays himself to be is him.

Ex: Denmark doesn’t want to look uncool in front of Norway when fighting Sweden. Norway’s indifference to Denmark is the punchline.

Wild, not selfish:

Lastly, it is important to note that Denmark’s viking phase is portrayed as wild. He has since calmed down. Yes, wild could mean selfish, but as shown in the context of the manga, he was not cognizant of the suffering of others.
