You opened your mouth, but nothing came out. Because your voice is no longer yours. And it hasn't been for a long time.
A strangled sob escaped you instead, as your knees gave out on you. You fell into the sand with a soft thud, curling in on yourself.
“Hey now,” the woman said, crouching down behind you. “Sweetheart.. Do you want to talk about it?” Her eyes were soft and motherly-like.
You just shook your head. You squeezed your eyes shut as your shoulders heaved with silent sobs. The woman didn’t speak. She continued to sit in front of you on the sand, pulling her shawl open and draping it over your shaking frame.
Eventually, after what felt like an eternity, you sat up slowly, wiping your soaked cheeks. ‘I—I’m sorry’ you tried to say, but the moment you opened your mouth, nothing but air came out. No voice, just shame.
The woman watched you with kind eyes. “Can you talk?”
You shook your head, the motion hesitant. “Do you know sign language?” Another shake.
The woman let out a quiet sigh, but it wasn’t a frustrated sigh. It was nothing like the usual sigh you hear. For once, there was no disappointment in it. At least not towards you. “I see. You know, I uhm .. I had a daughter once.. She was like you. She couldn’t talk either.”
Your eyes lifted towards her.
“She’s gone now,” the woman said softly, staring out at the waves. “She died here, 3 years ago. Right here on this beach.”
Your eyes widened, your entire body stilling.
“I think,” the woman continued, voice cracking, “she was tired. Tired of not being understood. Tired of being ignored. Tired of being told she wasn’t enough.”
A wave crashed nearby, louder this time. “She died by drowning, but sometimes I wonder if it was the silence that killed her and not the depth of the sea.”
You bit your lip hard to keep more tears from falling, but they fell anyway. Even at controlling your emotions, you fail.
“She was kind,” the woman whispered. Turning to look at you as she continued to talk. “and beautiful. But I never saw her gentleness when she was alive. I only saw the things she couldn’t do. I didn’t hear how loud she actually was, I didn’t hear the words she couldn’t say.”
Your breathing grew shaky, the story felt too close to home.
“I told her she was useless,” the woman choked. “I called her a burden. I said the kind of things you only realize are poison once it’s too late.” She turned to you, her eyes rimmed red. “And now.. she’s gone. My baby’s gone. And those words were the last ones she ever heard from me.”
“She used to cry without sound too,” the woman said. “Like you’re doing now. And I…I never knew how loud the silence could be until she stopped being here to cry at all.”
The two of you sat in stillness, the waves crashing as if even the waves, even the ocean, was mourning with you.
“Ah, I’m sorry,” the woman said at last, wiping her tears. “I didn’t mean to dump all that on you. You just reminded me of her.”
You looked at her and gave her a sad smile. It was the only thing you had to offer.
The woman reached out, gently tucking a stray hair behind your ear. “You’re not alone, even if you feel like no one hears you.” She smiled at you softly. You wondered if she was saying this because it was you, or because you reminded her too much of her daughter.
Maybe deep down it wasn’t even for you at all, maybe it was something she wished she could tell her daughter but couldn't, so she told it to you instead.
You blinked, looking up at the sky, trying to hold back another wave of tears.
“I could teach you sign language,” the woman said, clasping your hands together. “If you want. So that you never have to stay silent when you don’t want to be.”
You hesitated, then nodded.
