Throwback to that one time he pooped on his hide, so i had to replace it with an upside down waterbowl over a rock while washing it, and he ended up liking that more.
Seeking advice!
I was thinking of getting a sandboa and got this for free when i bought the enclosure. So my question is: Can this safely be used? I know it can’t eat on it, but would it be okay for the snake to roam around in it?
Edit: Someone answered and told me i definitely could not do it, so if anyone else is wondering then no, no reptiles should be on this
loose sand isn’t great for burrowing snakes as it doesnt hold structure well, alternatives include aspen, and coconut fibre or a 50/50 mix of potting soil (with no fertilisers!!) and play sand
Thank you i’ll keep that in mind!

hey ive seen you answer some asks about milksnakes in the past so i was wondering if you had any advice on the following: i have a 90 cm long 6 year old pueblan milksnake who has lost 20 grams over the past 3 months. he weighed 241 grams back and april and weighs 220 now. i was wondering if he might be losing too much weight if i continue feeding him 17g medium mice every 14 days like he has been fed since before i got him, and if i should instead feed every 10 days so he dont get too underweigh
Sorry it took me a bit to get back to you!
So in general, a reptile should never be /losing/ weight unless you’re trying to slim them down with a diet. Fed an appropriately sized feeder at a standard interval, a snake should grow and gain weight at a somewhat steady pace.
Dropping 20g isn’t a huge deal (heck, some of my snakes lose more than that when they poop) but I would recommend having a fecal test done just to rule out parasites.
And it’s hard for me to visualize body condition and general size without a reference image, but if he continues to lose weight and isn’t missing meals, I would either bump up the food size (although most milks usually like smaller prey) or increase the feeding interval to every 10 days like you mentioned.
I just took a look at your blog and your milk looks like they’re in excellent shape!! He definitely doesn’t look underweight. I would definitely get a fecal done as a precaution, though.
Thank you for answering i will definitely get him checked if he loses more weight!

So last april i weighed The Boy Elijah and he weighed 241 grams. I had been consistently feeding him medium mice (17g) every 14 days, and i continued this until now (july) where his weigh has come down to 220 grams. Should i start feeding him more often, or was he perhaps overfed back with his old owner, and now that he’s moved to a 4 times larger enclosure, the weightloss is actually healthy and to be expected?
He is around 6 years old, 90 centimeter long, and a pueblan milksnake
boosting bc idk colubrids
So long as he’s still active and eating and stuff, I wouldnt worry too much. Unless he loses a drastic amount of weight and starts to show more of his spine, ribs or skull definition, its probably a good thing. Moving to a bigger enclosure where he has more space to roam and engage will definitely help keep his weight healthier and more consistent.
Keep weighing him regularily and if he is steadily going down in weight and body condition, maybe then get him vet checked. Its hard to go off of ‘healthy weight’ by just looking at grams and not the actual animal.
Thank you!
