So perhaps my love for Alceste will always be an unrequited love of mine-- his feelings for Celimene will always override mine. Though that's alright. Time cures all desires-- and besides, I have my new husband to grow a romantic love with. I look forward to taking his hand in marriage and spending my days with him.

Why Can't We Be Friends?

Today I discovered a letter full of appalling texts, word after word of just badmouthing other people, and guess who wrote it? Turns out it was Celimene. Here, let me give you an example,

I hope things are good and well for you. I just thought it would be a nice consolation to know that my darling cousin has been left alone by the blunt Alceste. A Sweet Proposal, but An Even Sweeter Man
I can't believe it! Alceste finally dared to approach me and ask me to marry him! And you know, when push came to shove-- I couldn't do it! He was all "Madam, your virtuous beauty has no peer..." and I was all, "Were I to offer him this hand of mine, your friend Philinte, I think, would not decline" (Moliere's The Misanthrope, Act 5, lines 342, and 354-55). Can you believe that? I swear, that's what came out! And you know what? I'm really excited!
I finally agreed to be with Alceste, and he expected me to uproot my whole life and move into the beginning of nowhere! I’m only 21!
My dear cousin, you'll end up with a wonderful man who accepts you for your flaws and all. Alceste is long gone now, and rebuked from us. I wish you the best always, and I just know you'll do great things with your years to come.

I’d spent the past couple of years applying myself to my marriage — thinking about marriage, reading about marriage, and trying forms of couples’ therapy.
In this nonfiction article, Elizabeth Weil represents a kinder, more open-minded Alceste, and her husband Dan mimics Celimene-- this of course, is the ideal version of Moliere's The Misanthrope, as Mrs. Weil accepts her husband for his weird flaws and annoying tendencies.
