Alicia is the most famous blind Marvel character after Daredevil and she has been such a mainstay part of Ben's history since near the beginning, it seems disrespectful to me to remove her.

It shows its years of development hell and that it was originally pitched as a series very clearly. The acts are broken up into episode titles and the MCU styled random cameo centric ending of "more adventures are to come" style really sells it that this was just a cobbled together slightly higher budget version of the pilot episode. It felt more like Farscape than Star Trek, it's got the quirky aliens and seedy sides of the galaxy that Farscape was really known for.

Section 31 continues to be justified in New Trek to such a strange degree, they have effectively turned them into "Starfleet Intelligence but more willing to set phasers to kill", they even have an offical Starfleet liason now. Speaking of, this is supposed to be the Hero Captain Garret, the woman who will give her life, her ship, and her crew to save the lives of a one time enemy? Doesn't even feel like the same character.

And this month we got the new season of Prodigy, with the mystery teased twist of a returning Wesley Crusher, where he becomes the temporal engine for a space ship and he comes to terms with the human life he left behind...

Mhh...

However, it was also a series that was mired in behind the scenes issues, suffered an identity crisis with itself and the larger franchise, often had good ideas that were executed poorly, or even straight up bad ideas. It ran the gauntlet of good to decent to awful, it was never consistent. Despite its many, many flaws, there are always diamonds in the rough such as it’s worldbuilding and willingness to experiment which allowed the series to soar despite its issues.

So, when all is said and done, Discovery was the beginning of a new Star Trek era and for that I will always be thankful for it. The new era it ushered in can be just as rocky as the show itself. There are shows like Strange New Worlds that takes an abandoned idea from 1964 and revives it for the modern day, giving us a look at what could have been and some fantastic characters. Then there are series like Picard that don’t have any idea what it wants to be and relies on nostalgia to hoist it up. But it’s also the era of experimentation, something the old Trek era struggled with which caused the franchise to die in 2005. Lower Decks is a love letter to the franchise and being a comedy is a reminder to not take it too seriously, Short Treks allows short stories to be told in this vast universe and amazing characters, Prodigy allows the franchise to expand into the realm of kid’s television, and I am sure the new shows on the horizon will be just as ambitious.
