Cartomancy Card Meanings
gif credit
The act of divination with playing cards is called cartomancy, and just like tarot, each card has it's own meaning and interpretations. I previously made a post here detailing the basics. This post will cover only the interpretations of each card. Please note that these are the interpretations that resonate with me, and I have done the most extensive research to make sure each is as accurate as possible. The original document I started off with is very very old, and the resources I used at the time no longer exist which provided difficulty in completing this post, hope you can understand.
Additional reading can be found here: x. x. x.
Please do not repost, although you can use this information for your grimoire.
The Meanings
Do you have any tips for a beginner witch that needs to be as discreet as possible? ;-;
1. Micro-rituals
Tiny, private, and powerful:
Sigils on paper โ Draw one in a notebook, charge it in your mind, and tuck it away. No one needs to see it.
Candle magic in small doses โ Tea lights in mugs or jars, done in your room or hidden by a plant. Even a few minutes of focused intention counts.
Herbal sachets/pouches โ Small, discreet, tucked in a drawer or bag. They hold energy without being obvious.
2. Invisible spellwork
Visualization โ Sit quietly, close your eyes, and picture your intention manifesting. No tools needed.
Affirmations & chants โ Whisper them while doing daily chores, showering, or walking. People hear you talking, but itโs your magic.
Mindful energy work โ Touch your pulse, hands, or objects around you and direct intention internally. Nobody sees it, but itโs effective.
3. Disguise your practice in daily life
Charging a crystal? โRearranging my desk.โ
Journaling intentions? โBrain dump for the week.โ
Moon phase check? โChecking the weather/lighting.โ
Tea spell? Just tea. โโจ
4. Grounding & protection without fanfare
Keep a small protective object on you: a stone in your pocket, a ring, a hair tie.
Visualize a shield around your space before sleep. Quick, invisible, and powerful.
Sprinkle a tiny pinch of salt at thresholds if you feel like it โ itโs subtle and no one notices.
5. Reminder
Discretion doesnโt weaken your craft โ intention is everything. Magic doesnโt need witnesses. In fact, some of the most potent spells are the quiet, unseen ones. Protect your privacy, honor your limits, and know that you can be a witch without anyone ever knowing.

- Air: Which symbolizes communication, ideas, and inspiration, Air is an abstract and unconfined element that cannot be contained. Its energy is formless and exists on a conceptual level, representing your thoughts and intentions. Furthermore, Oxygen, which is a vital component of Air, sustains cellular respiration and life itself. In spellwork, Air functions as the affirmation, reflecting the expression of your intention and the message you are sending out into the universe. As a result, Air embodies the power of thought, speech, and mental clarity, making it a key element in spellwork for manifesting. ๐ฌ๏ธ๐ซง
- Earth: Which symbolizes grounding, stability, foundation work, and planting seeds. Earth is an abundant energy that provides the resources for material growth. Itโs steady and secure, yet can be unpredictable at the same time, as its foundation can shift depending on external circumstances. Overall, Earth remains consistent so long as you respect and honor Mother Nature and appreciate her generosity and provision. Remember, only harvest what you need. Additionally, Earth can be used in spells related to prosperity, protection, money, and more. Its versatility allows for various components in spellwork, such as herbs, crystals, salt, and other natural elements. ๐ฑ๐
- Water: Which symbolizes emotional healing and intuition. Water is a purifying and nourishing element that fosters spiritual growth and deeper awareness. Like a mirror, Water can symbolize reflection and can be a powerful tool for introspective purposes. Its fluid nature allows it to flow and adapt effortlessly, embodying transcendence. Just as waves crash onto the shore, Water can represent both transformation and strength. Additionally, Water can be used in spells related to healing, accountability, illusion, cleansing, or self-discovery, to name a few. Itโs a versatile element that supports emotional and spiritual enlightenment in all aspects. ๐ โจ
- Fire: Which symbolizes vitality, purification, divinity, and rebirth, Fire is both destructive and cleansing. Its flames are consuming yet transformative, clearing stagnant energy to make way for new beginnings. As the light in the darkness, Fire illuminates hidden truths and sparks insight. Itโs a swift-moving energy that quickly energizes and activates your spells. Beyond that, Fire offers warmth, passion, and inspiration, igniting your intentions and encouraging forward movement. It can be used in nearly all types of spellwork, from candle magic to rituals like scrying and burning intentions. ๐ฅโจ

๐น๐ฅ The Rite of Her Sacred Fires 2025 ๐ฅ๐น
On the full moon in May, hundreds across the world perform the Rite of Her Sacred Fires: a cross-tradition devotional rite to Hekate. Since we have no surviving record of festivals dedicated to Hekate, I like to observe this date as a yearly festival honoring the goddess. I have given Her offerings of handmade beeswax candles, honey cakes, pomegranates, and libations of wine, milk, and honey.
Hail Hekate, torch-bearing goddess of the many ways. Savior and protector, three-formed maiden of the golden sandals. May your sacred fires light our path, and may you always bring light to the darkness.

Happy Dionysia of the City ๐
The City Dionysia was celebrated in ancient Athens from the 10-17th of Elaphebolion, where Dionysos was honored with the performance of plays, sacrifices, and dancing.
For my celebration I removed the statue of Dionysos as they did in Athens, and walked Him back to the shrine to symbolize the procession. I then gave to Him offerings of frankincense and wine, and then read His Homeric and Orphic Hymns. Dionysos was given offerings of stick shaped bread during this festival, so I have given Him breadsticks along with the offering of grapes. Additionally, the god was celebrated with a procession of phalloi, so I have offered Him a beeswax phallus candle to pay homage to this tradition. I also anointed several candles with olive oil mixed with frankincense, cinnamon, and pine essential oils which will burn throughout the festival.

Tarot & Timing โณ
Did you know tarot can also help you understand when something might happen? Each suit is connected to elements + seasons + timing:
๐ฅ Wands - Fire, quick energy, days, Spring
๐ฌ Swords - Air, clarity + movement, weeks, Winter
๐ง Cups - Water, emotional flow, months, Summer
๐ Pentacles - Earth, slow + steady, years, Autumn
While not every reader uses timing, it can add another layer to your spreads ~ especially when asking when an event may unfold.
โจ Do you use timing in your readings, or do you let the universe decide?
Unpopular helpol opinion. If you cannot afford to waste food that you offered to a chthonic deity(es), then eat it. Yes, if you feel the need to, cleanse yourself after, but, it is not bad, especially if you cannot afford to waste food. You do not deserve to be told you have to throw it out or be made to feel guilty about it (I have never seen anyone do this but just in case).
DO NOT DO THIS!
Poor people do not have to sacrifice their well-being, safety, and security, because they're poor.
In many cultures, including ancient and modern Greek culture, miasma and similar concepts of spirit residue are a real thing and an important thing.
You can give an offering to the gods that isn't food. If you can't afford to offer food, offer something else! That is usually the responsible thing to do. Just don't endanger yourself just because you feel pressured to offer food, this is not traditional nor required for almost any deity across the Greek & many non-Greek pantheons.
Your safety is more important. There is nothing wrong with offering a non-food offering. Please, keep yourself safe, the gods don't want to see you throw away your well-being "just because" (and that's what it is, just because, as there are non-material offerings). You have a responsibility to yourself to keep yourself safe, and "basic cleansings" don't always remove miasma - and even if they did, that doesn't take away the risks and dangers of this.
Along those lines, even if it wasn't dangerous, I agree with the idea of eating food if you are poor but you need to do so safely. If you really want to offer this to a deity, make it known that it's the sentiment that counts - do not ingest miasma and spirit energy / energy of the dead! Eating miasma is not safe for you, and again, the gods don't want to see you do that! There are other, safe, accessible alternatives! If you want, check out this post on disposing of food offerings, because it mentions things like setting timeframes, but I also want to note that it's important to state clearly to your deity if it's for them to eat / just an offering for the sentiment, if you plan on eating it yourself after, etc. If it is a deity you are working with, they will likely appreciate the offering and let you eat it, especially since you were kind enough and gave them the respect of acknowledging that boundary and given your low-income situation - even cthonic and death deities. The polite thing to do is make any conditions known before giving a gift or offering, it keeps you safe, it keeps them respect, and it preserves your relationship.
Do not feel shame for being poor, but don't endanger yourself and punish yourself because you're poor either. There are just as good - if not "better" (depending on your practice, relationship with the spirit / deity, etc) - alternatives.
This may seem small to you, and if this doesn't resonate with you, that's totally fine and I respect your practice. I'm just putting this out there to those who this may resonate with because I see this as a safety hazard.
Being able to protect yourself and work with deities / spirits is not only respectful to them, but safe for you. There's no reason to be afraid of anxious, just make sure you're knowledgeable and research first. Thank you.
Some non-food offering alternatives:
Quality time! This one people often forget about, but just offering good company is appreciated by many deities.
Music and dance
Trinkets
Art, origami, poetry / letters, etc
Dedicating actions and behaviors to them as offerings, or dedicating parts of your overall practice to them
Prayers, words and speech
Smaller portions of food (like one bite, or the last sip of milk)
Water (fresh water from the faucet, or water from the rain, often work just fine)
Digital offerings (making collages, posting art online, etc)
No hate to the original user who blogged this, I am just adding my two cents and hoping to help those that this resonates with. Do not go harass this user. Thank you!
Adding a note: If you're working with spirits and non-chtonic deities, or even just a trickster, this is also a great way to get possessed. So, to anyone who resonates with this - please, for your own safety, don't do this!
