i’ve always believed that rose has a lot of contempt for slade when it comes to her being the only Asian Child of the family, the “illegitimate” one, who was born outside of wedlock, and that she’s somewhat “exotic” to them and is othered. like thinking of that thanksgiving family dinner the wilsons had in ds16 or joey’s wedding even…she feels cut out of slade’s good old fashioned, “Normal” White American Family…not just wrt to her being hmong-cambodian, but her being the product of slade cheating on his wife, it’s like she has to pay for her very existence…..addie’s utter contempt towards her i think is also racially charged, the microagressions seep out all the time and i feel rose hates slade for it more bc she feels she has to pay for the sins of her father (who took her from her home and culture and brought her to a totally foreign place)…it makes slade’s attempt to get her closer to her hmong culture all the more interesting (and ridiculous) to me….bc you can see that he feels a certain guilt over it now “you needed that experience to learn about your heritage” but rose i think still feels as though her father is ashamed of her/her existence in some sense

i want to make a wholeeee post about damian and rose as the only Illegitimate Asian Kids of their respective twisted white fathers and how that impacts them as characters (internally and how the writers treat them) but idek where to start

essentially, i think rose’s writing currently has the main problem of not giving her a cohesive and deeper arc, an overarching story esp wrt to her dynamic w/ slade and what her upbringing was etc etc that led her to where she is. priest retconned the drugging yeah but left a big plot-hole as to what happened to her in the years after lillian died and slade basically took custody of her and brought her to the states, and when she became the ravager. her arc in this way is…mostly left up for interpretation.

we know she lived with slade for a bit. then she was given over the titans for a bit, being trained by nightwing. and then years later she emerged as a vigilante of sorts with the ravager name. but we don’t know where her rage comes from and her anger toward her father (for abandoning her perhaps ?) comes from.

i understand why people push for an arc similar to the tt03 stuff, and the cass and david - ification of her and slade bc it DID have some interesting ideas for her. but it was executed poorly. i do not believe that he drugs are even essential for this. slade’s indoctrination/manipulation/control of her which tied into him training her (which i think is essential). the drugs aren’t necessary imo bc she has no need of them (she already has powers) and since in rebirth she was only 10 when slade took her in…that aspect of their relationship can still be written well !!

the issue with johns’ writing is that the problems are so glaring that i can’t take the character writing seriously. i think it’s jeopardised rose.

Also I just don't like how normal and okay everyone is with Rose being brutalized. More than Joey or even Grant ever were by Slade, even. More than 90's Slade ever would have! And the fandom likes to just ignore the fact that comes from a place of racism and misogyny because women are meat that only exist to serve the narrative of the men around them and making her violently unhinged and obsessed with the legacy of her white father for no discernable reason when she was introduced resenting him for Lillian's death with no explanation for those drastic shifts in the characters is both lazy shock value and an attempt to make the woc inherently evil and dirty.

Tbh Rose even being a mercenary doesn't make a ton of sense to me because hmong superstitions/spirituality/and traditions are all about how everything even the seemingly inanimate have souls and are deserving of respect and there is a big focus on respecting the dead and fearing ghosts and ancestor worship. And even if Rose and Lilian weren't practicing or particularly superstitious it's still very ingrained in the culture. That isn't to say that Rose would be a pacifist or wouldn't ever kill but it us to say she wouldn't do it without a damn good reason and I don't think a paycheck cuts it. Idk idk I just think it's weird that everyone is fully on board with a version of Rose with zero similarities to her introduction, whose every action and arc revolves around the men around her but particularly Slade in one way or another, and she as a teenage girl was both overly sexualized and horrifically victimized often at the same time while also having vague mental health issues from Miscellaneous drugs and being portrayed as an aggressor against the good and noble and heroic white people around her.

Also the drugging plotline was fucking stupid I hate it was fucking ridiculous. You lost me at Slade being able to capture and drug Cassandra Cain and nothing about that arc was worthwhile enough to win me back if you fw the drugging arc block me now I hate you and we have nothing in common. WHY WOULD HE DO THAT HE JUST TRIED TO GIVE HER UP FOR ADOPTION. HE DIDN'T WANT HER TO BE LIKE HIM HE DOESN'T WANT ANY OF HIS KIDS TO BE LIKE HIM HE PUSHES THEM AWAY FOR EXACTLY THAT REASON. HE TRIED TO PUSH ROSE AWAY FOR EXACTLY THAT REASON!! That's a different guy and a one-note shock value slop guy at that.

The more I think about Slade kidnapping Cass (he couldn't if he tried) and drugging her and Rose the more insane I go. He has no reason to do that. He would not do that. He literally did not gaf about the concept of an apprentice until the Teen Titan cartoon made it his main motivation and concurrent comics just ran with that I guess. Like yeah he had Tara but Tara wasn't a successor she was supposed to die in the end I'm pretty sure.

DC was generally obsessed with assassins desperate for heirs in this era though they did the same thing to Ra's for the sake of Damian and obviously that's David Cains whole thing. I think it only works for Cain and Cass though. Slade and Ra's are both immortal what the fuck do they need heirs/apprentices for. Bffr. #GiveAsianCharactersDiverseStorylines #OrElse

Also why would Slade encourage/force Rose to drug herself that's literally how Grant died. You don't think seeing his kid in a Ravager suit drugging and mutilating herself to be like him would be a source of distress for him. Was him sending her away to a civilian family not him trying to make up for his failures with his sons. Remember that Rose's kidnapping/Lili's death story takes place at the same time Joey is rendered mute by an attack from Slades enemies okay he is feeling a lot of regret right now as is he is not gunning for a repeat performance. I can't think of any in universe justification for this utter nonsense other than like. Slade also being brainwashed or drugged or something. What are we doing guys.

The story is supposed to justify these things to us the audience and they do not do that. The story is just straight up bad!! Using misc. Drugs as a plot device with no actual regard for the shitty depiction of addiction is bad!! Using brown teenage girls as narrative punching bags to show how ~super edgy and evil~ the white antagonist is, is bad!! Especially when you make Cass, a character whose entire character arc is her struggle for personhood and autonomy after being denied it her whole life, a prop who never actually deals with the lasting effects of being drugged and made to hurt people. Because Cass wasn't a character she was a plot device. Don't piss me off you're pissing me off drugging plotline fans are illiterate I'm sorry.

ok so here’s the thing. i understand why fleecs wrote it the way he did. but that’s not my rose. first of all in the few panels we saw her they made her look so scared. which bothers me because when she was kidnapped in deathstroke 1991 she wasn’t scared at all she was pissed off!!! i can’t think of a single time she’s gotten kidnapped and been all “🥺🥺 come save me :(“ NO she should be kicking and screaming!!!!!! i almost consider it out of character that she screamed “dad” right before she got shot because she Should have been biting people as soon as her mouth was free. she doesn’t gaf about slade saving her she should be trying to beat the fuck out of addie for kidnapping her. imo she shouldn’t have even been thinking about him other than blaming him for her getting kidnapped at all. where’s your fucking rage

i also think.. this is vague enough that there’s doubt. anything can happen here. the gunshot could be deathblow shooting addie (unlikely because of the descriptions for the next few issues but there’s still hope). maybe rose brought her own gun and is fighting back idk. if nothing else her gun is very much not pointed at her left eye so we should be safe from the drugging getting even more retconned. really my question right now is are they going to give her a healing factor to survive this (thereby recanonizing the serum in a way bc that was what gave her the healing…). we’re gonna be okay
