orionshuntâ:
âthat is the highest praise coming from a seamstress as accomplished as you are, my darling girl,â he nods severely, but his eyes light up with a familiar sense of mischief while his tone dips from lilting to genuine.
ellieâs laugh rings in his ears and heâs transported back to the past, and a much younger version of eleanore whittock staring up in his face through tearful eyes. their meeting had been through a stroke of fate, sheer luck by all accounts, but it had led to a deeply meaningful bond that lionel is so protective of to the extent that much of that feeling has spilled over to her son after his birth. little teddy, whom he has gifted a wooden sword to play the knight in shining armor, always coming to the aid of the other children in his neighborhood. heâs a tender boy, having inherited much of his motherâs disposition and while itâs never been cause for worry, ellieâs gentle nature is one to be uplifted and cherished for its sincerity.
itâs one of the things that he, too, sometimes tends to forget. ellie has a habit of placing others above her, as is evident in the costume he wearsâshe would wave it off with a smile and say itâs all him who managed to make it what it is but he knowsâheâs seen her fall asleep while working, a half-finished first idea of his outfit pinned to one of the mannequins in her studio. lionelâs lips quirk up into a half-smile, a touch of fondness replacing the frown that previously had the corners of his mouth spilling into long vertical wrinkles on either side of his chin. âthat he certainly is. better watch out, my darling, or muirisâll be taking him on as an apprentice.â
.
she blushes at the praise, quite frankly unable not to. still, the way leo talks to her now is not rare for him, he has always seemed to hold her in such high of an esteem sheâs quite sure she hasnât earned. he is unique in knowing her at her absolute lowest, and had seemed to care for her despite it. most likely, because of it. it isnât something she ponders on often, but sometimes she wonders if heâd like her as much if sheâd been a proper, non-disgraced whittock when she met him. she hopes so. âyouâre ridiculous, and very kind.â
and that, perhaps, is what makes him so odd to see him here, regardless of the loveliness of seeing him at all, is that right now is so similar to life just before sheâd known him. she watches him frown, and her eyebrows furrow, one hand outstretched to smooth it like heâd done to her so many times in their months in yorkshire. but before she can, he rights it himself, and her eyes soften along with his.Â
âoh, goodness.â she begins, thinking of john working alongside the man. it isnât actually a terrible thought - johnâs shown interest in many things: reading, doodling, cat-training. however, the career prospects for those hobbies are not the most fruitful. and he certainly has experience with ghosts. this, she does not mention. âi think heâd like that. heâs spending much more time with friends as of late, which is-â she breaks off to spend a moment just smiling. she truly is very glad of it - for a while, heâd been so internal in his thoughts to everybody his own age, getting on much better with her friends in a way that had been worrying. âbut heâs so clever, and i think heâd rather understand the supernatural than be afraid of it. in a decade or so, thatâd be a dream occupation. i donât think he has much interest in taking over the shop. i wouldnât expect him to, iâm sure all the paperwork seems awfully dull to a little boy.âÂ
