My mother told me once that getting old was a blessing and a curse - on the one hand, she doesn’t have to worry about men trying to coax her into cars, on the other she is now invisible. Older women, no longer considered useful by society as baby-makers nor sexual objects, are ignored. We felt it was important to question the obsession with youth, and photograph two amazing older women, Lina and Pam.

Emma, our director, has her own reasons for the project. Having started the brand at 28, she’s now 41, and looking at how age has affected her own sexuality and it’s connection with her brand. Read more about her thoughts here.

 This Thursday (April 20th, 2017) Scarecrow Video and Eldergoth Central present Gothic Film 101: The Haunting.

Join us at 7pm Thursday night for a screening and discussion of this masterwork of horror and its place in the gothic genre. The class will be led by Scarecrow’s Rhias Hall and is free to the public.

This Thursday at 7PM I will be teaching a Gothic Film 101 class at Scarecrow Video in Seattle.

We’ll be talking about what qualifies a film as Gothic.

Then we will be watching Jane Eyre (1947), and having a post film discussion.

It is free for anyone who wants to show up.

Tired, a lot of the time. We’re lured out of our tired, hermit-like ways for big fancy events, or for reunion tours of favorite bands. A lot of us want to go out to club nights more often, but work schedules / family life / chronic illnesses / budgets make it difficult. 

But given a chance, we will flock together in dark clusters, talking about bands we’ve seen, books we’ve read, clubs that no longer exist, and makeup and fashion tips we’ve figured out as we’ve gotten older.

I felt the air in my lungs grow a bit softer and my bones grow a bit stronger as I started shoving book recommendations and Netflix and everything else and oh cara mia I am feeling that moonglow yet again.

I feel this video was more successful than the companion video, 40 Years of Women’s Goth Style. This one felt less costume-y, and more authentic.
