A Korean satellite imaged the dry river bed of the Tsauchab in January of 2013, showing the bright white salt deposits in a dune sea. The white path leading to a parking area is dune 45, a tourist destination.

Earth from Space: Algerian sands

This image from the Ikonos-2 satellite shows the sandy and rocky terrain of the Sahara desert in western Algeria. 

Algeria is the largest country in Africa, and it is covered more than 90% by the Sahara desert. Major oil and natural gas deposits lie beneath the Sahara, contributing to Algeria’s position as one of the wealthiest African nations.

With the Mediterranean Sea almost 500 km away, the closest town to the area pictured here is Taghit in the Algerian province of Béchar.

A Satellite’s First Look at Earth Has a Stunning Photo of the Sahara

Sentinel-2A conducted its first ever scan of Earth on June 27th. The result was this gorgeous image of the Sahara in central Algeria, showing a glorious terrain of rocks and sand.
