“I realize that Italians would never decorate their home with wildflowers. Wildflowers are weeds, and do not represent a respectable home. A vase of roses would be more suitable within a culture engrained with bella figura. The idea of bella figura means many things in Italy. It translates to ‘beautiful figure’ but is understood as projecting a good image and keeping up appearances…” In her latest piece our A Girl Abroad contributor Hannah Frances shares a glimpse into Italy’s lush landscapes and more.

I’m not trying to create something new. I’m trying to create the unknown. Each empty canvas is the beginning of my new essay about a battle between utopia and dystopia.

For me, the process of painting is like a sudden splash of strong emotions from the past. It’s like a culmination of idea after idea, success, failure, struggle and inspiration, all presented to the viewer on a piece of canvas. I never know how the final image will look and I don’t want to.

Through the use of colors, different styles and philosophy, I try show that the future is a chain of choices made today. I want to believe that one day greed, anger and a never-ending cycle of wars will be replaced with peace and love. This is my utopia.

There is no place quite like LA. Call it beautiful. Call it superficial. Call it home. Call it a brew its own special taste of alienation. Maybe it's the sun that kisses everything that glimmers and shines. Maybe it's the sun that burns everything down until there is nothing left but a thick layer of ashy soot. There is no place for the in-between. The in-between is irrelevant. The in-between is invisible.There is no individual. Individuality is packaged as a brand. A brand to be consumed. Manipulated. Sold. Irony runs. Irony gasps for air. Irony knows that the in-between is the space many inhabit. Click. Turn on the tv screen. Absorb what we see. Absorb self into consummerism. No time to rest. Enslave oneself in the vicious cycles of work. work. work. This is the bible. This is the holy grail. Big Brother sees. Big Brother watches. Big Brother knows our desires. yearnings. fears. Hail, hail Big Brother.Bow down to Big Brother. Plastic. Everywhere I turn is plastic. Plastic that bends. Plastic that fails to see the broken. Plastic fails to see everything in ruin. Plastic pours the ghettos with soy milk, without realizing it needs clean water.Plastic builds, without realizing that foundations needs to heal. Hail, Hail Big Brother. Silence.
