Sparrow Suicide Pact (or something...)
Was in the kitchen today making cheese, tomato, steak quesadillas. Heard a bird smash into our sunroom and looked up just in time to see another little brown body dash itself against the window quickly followed by a third. Each dull smack against the window was punctuated by my surprised exclamations which increased in intensity with each successive hit.
“Oh, oh! Oh!!”
“What, What?!” my mother asked from the other room. I opened my mouth to answer as I prepared in my head to go see if the birds were alright. Before I could say a word three MORE birds hit the glass full speed.
Smack!
Smack!
Smack!
And I made a horrified sound as images of old movies (Alfred Hitchcock) skittered through my brain and in that split second I imagined a whole flock was attempting to commit suicide against our window. I pictured myself trying to run out on the deck to stop them somehow and I felt helpless.
But the insanity stopped at 6.
6 loud hits against the glass.
2 birds sat on the deck looking disheveled. One flew off ( a bit lop-sidedly) as soon as I opened the door.
The other seemed to recover after being warmed up in human hands for a bit and a third dazed and rumpled little fellow blustered out from under the deck boards and flew away. I didn’t see any sign of the other three but I found no bodies.
6 hits but seemingly no casualties, then.
Aside from a burnt quesadilla.
