He looked up to the rotten wood and smiled; for the small shrub that sit in front of him would not take his place in Links heart. He murmered something quiet as he turned to walk away.

When Link's mother passed after taking him to the Kokiri forest, many of the small people were afraid of him, as he was a foreign object in their secluded forest. Nobody spoke to him as a baby, only fed and cared for him as the Deku tree had ordered. Not even his best friend, Saria, had taken a liking to him until he became a boy. So, naturally, Link never learned how to talk.
Speech
Link does not speak in sentences. He will use words and motions to communicate, and will use simple words that he's heard before. He is intelligent--however can easily be seen as either stupid or rude depending on how he reacts to people. He tries his best to communicate the best he can--but hand motions, eye contact, and one-word sentences can only get you so far.
Writing
When the Kokiri finally began to speak with him, they taught him how to write, since it was easier than trying to teach him how to speak. They taught him with special pastes made from plants and berries and used brushes with odd, hair-like fibers. He practiced more than any of the others, and soon his handwriting stood out so much that he began to make his own paper and write with ink he'd made from Octorok's that would wander in near the waterfall.
