Not entirely sure where I'm going with her family, but I always thought a Corpo V would have blood family to get them through a prestigious education and help them land a cushy job straight after graduation. Something I forgot to incorporate into Mari's backstory (but it may come into play later) is that because her Tatay is Batangueño (from the Batangas region in the Philippines) this is literally part of her culture
Because the balisong originates from Batangas, specifically in the Taal region (which is mentioned in the Hi Nay episode "Noche Buena" as being where Mari's Lola [grandmother] settled and where she'd spend Christmases meeting nonhuman creatures), they're literally part of Mari's lineage through her Tatay.
(and now I need to draw her just wielding this knife when she decides that magic isn't enough 😂)
Whenever an English-speaking show goes international, please understand that not every language shares the same problem as English -- I mean specifically the use of singular "they/them".
Some languages such as Malay, Indonesian, Tagalog, Turkish, etc. have singular pronouns that are already gender neutral.
Meanwhile there are some languages such as Japanese don't even have pronouns. They refer people based on a person's occupation (workplace hierarchy), their position in the family, their age, and simply the respectful Miss, Mister, and [surname]-san.
Don't be mad if certain non-English dubs remove a "I go by 'they/them'" scene. This isn't about ignorance. It's about not creating a problem that's not even a thing in the local language. Don't make the problems of English (or any language in general) into another language's problem.

Hi! I was working on this before I took a break. Honestly will be staying on break, but figured I should post this since I actually finished it. I thought the song was perfect. It's not typical Samurai, but then they're not performing as Samurai anyway. Something like V asking Kerry if he can do a little something with her for her best friend's birthday, and when Kerry knew who and what it was for, he said ok and they looked for songs together. And they chose this song. Johnny just happened to be there because he's always checking up on V anyway, and he knows what this date means. And I got Martha (from the ofrenda) just because she looks cool with her Valentinos jacket lol. Oh! And just think somebody's playing the flute, or it's pre-recorded haha
