You know our society is fucked up when people seriously think being a criminal defense attorney is like. A moral evil. Like people seriously jump to “wow you defend murderers” as if the majority of “crime” that happens on a daily basis isn’t literally stuff like addicts being caught possessing drugs or homeless people being arrested for loitering or fucking poor women stealing food and clothes for their kids like… the average person is just one or two paychecks away from also being deemed a “criminal” by society but yeah sure you should definitely act like needing to be defended against the state makes you an automatically morally bad person

Also you’re seriously dumb if you think criminals don’t deserve a defense. That means you’re willing to accept that the capitalist colonial state has arbitrary power to arrest and detain you no matter what. You act as if a criminal having the right to a defense is a bad thing but you don’t even fucking realize how that right to a defense is the one thing that theoretically stops the government from being able to take away literally everything to your personhood

Like actually women and children who kill their rapists and abusers DO deserve a defense. Sex workers do deserve a defense. Addicts do deserve a defense. Homeless people do deserve a defense. Black people and Indigenous people who are arrested by the police for literally the smallest things do deserve a defense. Teenagers shoplifting from big corporate grocery stores do deserve a defense. You’re out of your mind if you think criminal defense is some like inherently immoral thing and you’re out of your mind if you think the capitalist racist state should have the power to unleash its full carceral wrath on your fellow people
