For Dust Thou Art Character Spotlight (Ch12)
I think this will be the last spotlight, as far as the main fic goes, and contains our last three characters!
Fanfiction here and blog tag here.
The Mouthpiece of the Gods
Our very own Ser Robyn Rhysling! Mysterious, one-eyed, and dispensing wisdoms in the forest with a raven on his shoulder.
Odin, is that you?
He's an alpha and his dĂŚmon is a common raven, actually one of the larger varieties of corvid, as well as one of the most common. His name is Dinon, which is a name of uncertain etymology, possibly derived from Ancient Greek δξΚνĎĎ (deinos) meaning "terrible, fearful, mighty" as well as "wondrous, strange, astounding" and "skilful, clever."
A conundrum of conflicting ideas, just like our man here. I have many thought about this man, his history, and his dĂŚmon, but all of them would be spoilers so I'm not going to tell you. Sorry.
Beez Twins
The Beesbury twins, Humfrey and Beatrice! I decided a while ago to have his sister married to Hardyng instead of the other way around because we have no idea which way is canon. But actually creating a fully fledged OC with a face came later, as a result of this post, which shows this woman's dress in greater detail, which appears to be both yellow and black and in the shape of diamonds, and this post derived from it, pointing out that Hardyng is in the tent as well.
Thus, the twins were born. They have the same dĂŚmon, which is far more common in identical twins rather than fraternal twins.
In Westeros, identical twins are those that share a gender, meaning both their sex & presentation, in case you don't remember my vocab. Biologically, twins that share both are born from the splitting of a single egg, our real-world definition of identical twins, although Westeros doesn't know this particular fact.
All other twins are fraternal, born from two separate eggs fertilized at the same time. Fraternal twins in Westeros (Planetos?) are still pretty likely to share either sex or presentation, but never both. Sharing neither is very, very rare, which is what makes the Beesbury twins so memorable.
Humfrey is a male alpha, and Beatrice is a female omega, and both of them have Rock Bees, also known as the Giant Honey Bee for their dĂŚmons. Bees of various subspecies, as you can imagine, are the Beesbury family's most common dĂŚmon. Humfrey's dĂŚmon is named Jenar, which means "yellow" in Javanese. Beatrice's dĂŚmon is named Miela, which means "sweet" in Esperanto, derived from mielo "honey", ultimately from Latin mel.
I gave away most of their backstory in the chapter, but here's another quick summery! Both of them are loud and free and wild, traits far more acceptable in male alphas than female omegas. Beatrice chaffed at her parents insistence that she behave, and Humfrey at what he perceived as them trying to change his sister, and eventually the two absconded under the guise of traveling the tourney circuit. They met the quiet Humfrey Hardyng at one of them a few years ago, and made fast friends with the man, who was initially alarmed at the sudden approach of the rather exuberant twins.
Hardyng made quite a stir, when he won the Maidenpool tournament in 208 and proposed to Beatrice instead of naming whomever the tourney was held for. Delighted, Humfrey Beesbury helps them elope that day and both twins have been avoiding their parents' request to come home since.
Neither of them are the heir, since they have one elder alpha brother I haven't bother to name, and so the trio have been traveling between tourneys for the last year. Beatrice isn't pregnant yet, taking moontea, but her brother is likely to settle with them once they do decide to have children, and return to Hardyng's family seat, as he is an heir.
Most people with very small dĂŚmons are likely to have a protective casings for them made to avoid serious, scarring injuries. A person with a worm might carry them around in an hollowed gourd, and richer folk might have small boxes reminiscent of real-world snuffboxes made. The twins, however, chafe at such restricting environments and avoid them entirely by hiding under the feathers of Hardyng's Moon Condor, which is why they're almost never visible.
Bonus dancing twins!
