Students from PS 86 were able to create these three-dimensional faux taxidermy animal sculptures.Â
Throughout this program students were able to define, identify and discuss both historical and cultural elements of their community. Working with the theme of community the students merged the visual arts with literacy to enhance their observational abilities, critical thinking, problem solving and literacy development. The study of community lends itself to an integrated approach as students combine literacy skills, and artistic abilities to understand the cultural, literary and artistic elements that make up their community in the Bronx. This finished product, the result of fifty sessions divided between five 3rd grade classes, has been permanently installed in PS 94.
This project with P.S. 94 is funded in part by a grant from the New York State Council on the Arts.

Students from PS 86 were inspired by Van Gogh’s paintings of sunflowers. After drawing flowers from observation, learning basic color theory and painting technique students were able to create their own.Â

Parents from International School for Liberal Arts and High School for the Teaching and Professions were able to come together on Saturdays to work on art projects and build community. These are photographs from the culminating event.Â
This project is funded by a grant from the New York City Department of Education in collaboration with Lehman College Art Gallery/Community Change Inc.
Students from MS 101 and PS 304 are hard at work beautifying the school. Over the course of just six sessions students were able to learn about a master artist, isolate the most recognizable parts of their master paintings, prime, sketch and paint on the twenty doors located throughout MS 101, PS 304 and P10x. Students really took ownership of their work, setting up their painting areas, getting paints, making choices while painting, and cleaning up at the end of the sessions. They were also able to work collaboratively in groups, usually two elementary school students and two middle school students in a group.Â
