Apollo 18
In my series Apollo 18, I examine the concept of reconstruction through the medium of photography. I was curious to see what kind of results can be achieved using software that is now accessible even to everyday users, and to what extent these results correspond to the reality we think we know. I was interested in how static photographs can be used to extend a given scene into virtual space, allowing it to become rotatable and navigable.
Throughout my work, I repeatedly encountered the limitations of precise reconstruction. The programs I used rely on specific analytical methods and construction processes, during which information can be lost or replaced through automated procedures. As a result, such reconstructions often become inaccurate, difficult to interpret, abstract, or incomplete. Software-based reconstruction focuses on the details within images, attempting to create their spatial versions by fragmenting, analyzing, and then recombining them.
The subjects of my investigation were the photographs produced during the Apollo program, which stood at the center of humanityâs efforts to land on the Moon. This iconic event was known to most people only through written accounts and images. I worked with photographs taken by the astronauts themselves, which are freely accessible to the public.
Using these images, I created three-dimensional objects whose virtually unwrapped versions were printed and then reassembled in physical space. The final photographs depict the resulting models, collages, and installations. In the process, I used traditional image-editing software, 3D modeling tools, geographic information systems, and generative image-to-3D technologies.
