Growing up, Edgar was one of those kids who had potential. His parents kept pushing him to try harder, to think about what he could be if he just applied himself a little more, but honestly Edgar didnât have the enthusiasm for his academics. He would rather sit in the band room geeking out than studying. Being the family disappointment only continued when he refused to go to University and helped out at his Grandfatherâs store instead.
The record store/second-hand bookshop was a family-owned business, and Edgarâs second home. Ed grew up making music, helping people with their instruments, giving album recommendations and learning the ropes from his Gramps. Â His dad, however, had no interest in running the store. - preferring money and the more practical side of life. When Edgarâs grandfather passed away his dad, Emilio, wanted to sell his fatherâs livelihood. However, for the first time in his life, Edgar cared enough to fight for the tiny shop, and convinced his father to let him run it all on his own. Ed is now determined to prove that heâs not a failure, to prove his father wrong. Heâs currently in the process of opening up the store to open mic nights and small gigs.
The only time he really speaks to his father, is for holidays or business. Being such a private person to begin with, this rift with his dad didnât help. His parents were barely aware of Edâs ex-relationships, or interests beyond the store, a whole secret life they werenât interested in. The only member of his immediate family that Edgar still kept  in contact with is his sibling, and more recently, his mother.
Unfailingly generous, a lil bit dumb, huge himbo-energy, Edâs the kind of guy where if youâre his friend, you have a friend for life. He smokes too much, falls in âloveâ too much, and has never made a concrete decision in his life, but heâs truly trying his best âď¸
wc: give him a best friend fuck me up!!! smoking buds, childhood friends, fwbs, exes - messy/ good/not quite done, fellow musos, ppl who perform at his store, cousins, his sister (pls), camping friends, complicated friendships, crushes, people he worries about/people who worry about him, a good Found Family trope, idek anything and everything

Celeste walked him out to the gardens, still lit by occasional lanterns and lampposts. It was evening and a cool breeze blew through the various bushes and plants. She was holding onto his arm, leading him away as people helped up the asshole and tried to figure out what to do. Clearly it was time for them to go. Celeste felt him squeeze her arm and she laughed breathlessly. âMe? Iâm fine! Youâre the one who got hit.â She looked at his face, cupping his cheek and brushing her thumb gingerly over his cut lip. âIâve never seen you that angry⌠I almost want to tell you that violence isnât the answer⌠but that was really satisfying.â She admitted, kissing his cheek.
But they probably had to head home. Edâs lip was bleeding a bit and his eye looked a bit fucked. And Celeste had long since gotten tired of this place. âWe should go to my place. I can get you cleaned up. Try to get some ice on that eye.â She held onto his shoulders, looking at him. âAre you okay? Seriously, Ed.â She said, more seriously, dropping pretense. âYou just got⌠punched, because of me. I feel bad. Even if Iâm⌠incredibly attracted to you.â She admitted with a teasing smile, brushing his curls out of his face.
a choked out laugh left Edgarâs lips, sounding more like a cough than anything else. âis this some knight in shining armour shit?â he asked wryly, squinting to look up at her through his busted eye, sickly smile on his too-pale face. he felt worse as time went on, but was overall glad Celeste was okay. âI dunno if Iâve ever been that angry,â maybe it was the combination of running into Jen, the stress of helping run the gigs at the festival, and the slurs directed at Celeste, but Ed had never been so easily tipped over the edge before.Â
Nodding his answer, yes, Edâs hand touched the hand on his shoulder. Half to reassure Celeste, half to tether himself to her, a grounding presence. âIâm okay,â he finally managed to say, his senses slowly regathering themselves, breathing evening out, âdonât feel bad, seriously.â he leant into the hand brushing away his curls, seeking affection in his haze,  âI just... couldnât stand anyone being that rude to you. You donât deserve that.â
He felt it before he ever saw it coming, the sharp pain, the blow to the side of his head. blinding, searing, enough to make him forget for a second exactly why he was in the middle of this, and halt. then came Celesteâs strong hands, pulling him back, tugging him away from the man ed was just about ready to... no, he didnât want to think about what he could have done if she hadnât intervened. then came her voice, quick and reassuring, leading Edgar away, eye swelling a little, cut on his bottom lip - what the hell had he done? shit. âShit,â came his jagged response finally as Celeste squeezed his arm trying to ground him, but he barely paid attention as she led him out the bar, to the gardens. Festival goers loitered around them, oblivious to the commotion in the bar, Edgar staring blankly at them. Eventually they found somewhere quieter, the dimmed sound making it easier for him to think, to gather himself together. Fuck. Through the fog of adrenaline and shock, there was Celeste standing above him. Edâs hand reached for her shoulder, touching her soft hair as he shot her a wheezy smile. He tried to speak through his shaky breaths, eyes softening, âyou okay?â
âokay man, let me introduce you to our Friday night tradition,â Ed grinned at his newest employee, carrying two beers, handing one to Peyton. It was getting dark, around the time the record store started closing and the weekend began, âfirst, we drink,â he held up his beer, in a cheers, âand while we do that, ya gotta choose an album, any album, whatever makes you happiest. Then, we hang out, and I show you what Chicago has to offer.â
The last thing Celeste wanted was to start some kind of argument in the middle of this event. People were drinking wine and chatting and laughing. The lights were casting such a nice glow on everything. But this asshole just kept bothering her. She was about to say something about the shit heâd just spewed, but instead there was Ed coming up to the two of them, and she smiled, trying not to look too relieved. But in all honesty, she was. While Orion had worked as a paramedic, it didnât mean that he knew how to deal with direct conflict- Celeste worked in bars and got an occasional touchy customer, but the amount of lewd comments and the reaching and trying to fondle her⌠she let Ed get between them, shaking her head and not answering. Was she okay? She wasnât even sure.
Having a more masculine presence show up only added fuel to the fire. The guy was more irate now, irritable as he started motioning towards her. âI was just talkinâ to the pretty crossdresser, buddy. Why donât you get your own?â The guy laughed, rather grossly, and Celeste said over Edâs shoulder at the man: âHon, Iâm not interested. How can I be any more clearer?â The guyâs chest bumped into Edâs as he tried to keep talking to Celeste and get closer to her, growling. Clearly his pride was damaged, and a wounded dog loved to bark. âYou fuckinâ whore, you serious? You fuckinâ tease! Youâre lucky I even tried, you fuckinâ freak!âÂ
âLook, weâre askinâ you nicely, back off,â they were chest to chest now, Ed trying to put as much space between Celeste and the creep as possible. He was filled with something more protective and angrier than heâd been in years. As a rule, Ed was a pacifist. He met life with easy smiles, âno worriesâ, water off a duckâs back... until it came to the people he cared for. Really cared for.  Turns out, Celeste was one of those people. Someone heâd break the rules for if she were hurting. âWhat did you call her?â Ed spat, glaring at the man. All it took was one word and Edgar snapped, his fist flying through the air, landing squarely against the manâs cheek, knocking him backwards. Pacifism? Dead. he couldnât see how someone could go so far out of their way to ruin someoneâs night. Unaccustomed to any form of violence, his fist swung again, blindly tackling the man to the ground, not caring one bit about the people watching.

The voice wasnât familiar at first but when she spun to get a look at her approacher, it all began to come clear. âYes, Dani. Hi again,â she greeted with a smile, tapping her chin for a moment before snapping her fingers once. âEdgar,â she finally said confidently with a nod. She laughed slightly, at herself mostly and nodded. âIâm okay. I know this attitude isnât what you might remember, I apologize. I just needed a rest but Iâm also glad to have run into you.â
âYup, you got it. The one with the terrible karaoke voice,â Ed confirmed with a grin and a nod, surprised she even remembered him after the blur of the night. âItâs all good,â he waved away her apology, âDo you wanna talk about it? Or... if you donât have work we can find ya some place better to rest? Canât imagine the steps of the hospital are too calming... they kinda give me the creeps.â
âI mean, it is your birthday gift card.â James said with a soft smile, pushing himself off the counter, moving to grab a pair of drum sticks. His hands always had to be doing something, usually tapping out some beat. âIf you wanna get something for the band- whatever you want.â He said with a nod, taking his seat back on the counter, twirling the drum sticks in his hand a bit as he did so. He felt his eyebrows raise some as Ed in fact took the bait, his face breaking out into a grin as he listened to the other man talk. âHooking up with a friend, huh?â James gave a teasing wiggle of his eyebrows, though if anything, he was beyond happy for Edgar. If anyone deserved good things to happen in their life, it was him. âBut seriously, thatâs great. I mean-â He waved a hand, trying to place his words. âIâm happy for you- Do you think things will get more serious for you two? Or just strictly hooking up only?â James asked, moving the drum sticks to his thigh, lightly tapping out a random beat on them as he talked with Ed. âAnd nah, nothing going on for me. Just either work, band stuff, or hanging out with friends.â He gave a slight shrug of his shoulders. While it wasnât much, it was more than James could have hoped for. Having a job, being a part of a band, having close friends who stuck by his side through everything he had been through. With an amused expression, James watched ad Edgar grabbed the book, his entire face lighting up at the mention of them having gigs. âPerfect! Mind if I see it so I can put it all into my phone?â Loving the fact that they were getting enough gigs that Edgar had to start to write them down. When he had started the band with Ed, all James expected from it was just messing around in the shop. But now that they were getting gigs, quite a few from the sound of it, was just beyond anything he could have hoped for.Â
Ed didnât really share parts of his romantic life often, except when it came to James. In the space of their friendship, James had watch Ed fall into love and out of love multiple times, watched the stories of people he met unfold, and fall apart. He understood just how badly his last few relationships had ended. âUh... I dunno, honestly.â Ed messed up his curls even further with his hand, as he tried to explain the dynamic between himself and Orion, âwe hook up, we hang out, uh, I dunno, itâs fun.â He paused, looking down at his hands before glancing up at James again with a deflated sigh, âI donât wanna mess it up again, ya know? I donât exactly have the best track record with flings... dating... any of it.â Not wanting to mess it up was at least a step in the right direction, a change from Edgarâs approach to relationships in the past. They all seemed to fail miserably, with their only common denominator being Edgar. âAh, we gotta get you out there, if ya want. Meet new people.â Ed said, not quite believing James didnât have anything going on in his life. âYeah, for sure,â he slid the book over to James, it was a little tattered, one page filled with all their upcoming dates, âgo for it! Kinda weird that the bandâs actually getting gigs, right? Not bad.â
She laughed, brushing one of his stray curls back for him sweetly. âYouâre such a good cheerleader. Itâs definitely weird not getting tipped. But they paid me to be here, which a lot of normal drag shows donât do. So I guess it evens out.â She laughed, giving a shrug. There was a little table set up with wine and someone was going up to sing a few songs, so the music continued. Everything was very pretty with all the lanterns and fairy lights, and Celeste was eager to get a bit more wine. She glanced over when Ed mentioned the guy who sheâd been trying to avoid. âYeah⌠sometimes people get a little too into it.â She brushed it off. âWant some wine? I can grab us each a cup. Maybe Iâll lie and say weâre hanging out with two other people.â She teased, a hand resting on Edâs chest briefly before she moved back. She was hard to miss- the tallest person in the room who also happened to be in drag. But she practically floated as she moved to the table, which was covered in little cups with the corresponding wine bottle behind them to signify what was what. The table was unoccupied, which was even better.
As she debated, she felt someones hand brushing over her lower back, a bit too close to her ass, and she whipped around, seeing that guy from before, who was already moving closer to her. âHey gorgeous, you really got me going with that dance. You know how to drive someone wild, huh?â Her brow furrowed and she stepped back a bit. âItâs just a performance, hon.â Celeste said, getting sick of this. âYou do get that, right?â The man was clearly a little bit tipsy, reaching out again. She was used to grabby bar-goers and even weird drunk bachelorette partiers grabbing wigs and dresses. She was trying not to make a scene, not wanting to be the drag queen who ruined the evening. She already felt a little out of place. But the man had grabbed her hips and gotten her ass this time and she finally gave him a push back. He seemed irritated but undeterred, which was infuriating. âCâmon, câmon, you canât be all dressed up like that and not want to get somethinâ in that mouth.â She rolled her eyes.Â
...
As Celeste got them their wine, Edgar watched on as she floated through the crowd confidently, admiring her as he so often did. Ed ready for a nice night with Celeste, a chance for the two of them to relax, maybe dance, definitely drink. Something sweet, like most their time together. His hopes for a stress-free night were curbed at the creepy man returned, standing too close to Celeste for Edâs liking. Just like during the show, Ed watched on, jaw tightening as the man reached for Celeste. Annoyance flared through him as the interaction continued, something boiling and protective raging inside him when the man grabbed Celesteâs hips. Pushing up off the chair, Ed stormed over to the pair, lips pressed into a tight line, eyes narrowing as he approached ,âyou okay?â came his quiet concern, glancing up at Celeste, ignoring the guy completely. He knew she and Orion could handle themselves, that didnât mean he would sit back and do nothing. His gaze only to cut the creep when he heard of the manâs sentence, sending his blood boiling. âHey man,â he spoke without thinking, stepping between Celeste and the drunken man, âyou better back the hell off.â

It was an odd event to perform at, but Celeste had been hired to dance at weirder spots. It was the evening now, and after everyone had gotten to walk around for a wine tasting, get a little tipsy, there was a nice little spot for live music⌠and lipsyncing, and dance. Lanterns and hanging lights in a courtyard with music from speakers, and Celeste was having a great time. Surprisingly a good crowd, despite the weird venue. And sheâd worn a nice little off-the-shoulder black gown to move in. She had been enjoying the energy, the whooping and cheers, as was usual. But there was a man who sometimes got a little too grabby- he was clearly a bit drunk, getting into the music. First he was there with some friends, but they seemed to dissipate as the night went on. But he remained. She had been focusing on Ed, who was smiling and watching from the side, but would get distracted as a hand brushed her side. She had leaned in at one point, a part of her dance, and the man said something about how high up her dressâs slit went. It was getting irritating, but sheâd dealt with worse. Eventually, the number was over, and people were clapping. She felt a bit of relief, smiling and bowing and moving towards Ed with a smile. âDid you like it?â She asked, a bit breathless and pink in the cheeks. Trying not to pay attention to the guy who was still watching her from behind.Â
...
Edgar clapped along with the rest of the crowd, cheering the loudest, probably too enthusiastic for a show but he didnât care. He was always enthusiastic when it came to supporting the people he cared about. As Celeste sauntered over, Edâs smile matched hers, his nod eagerly answering her question. âIt was brilliant,â he breathed, not exaggerating at all how much enjoyed her performance, âthat first bit? Pwhoa.â Ed shook his head in amazement, curls flying about as he grinned at Celeste. The grin dimmed however as Ed glanced behind her, to the man still staring at Celeste, Edgarâs discomfort returning just as quickly as it disappeared. He wasnât naĂŻve enough to think this was the first time someone had gotten too into the show and the performers, but seeing it actually happen was a whole different story. âWhat about that guy?â A subtle nod to behind Celeste was all the indication Ed gave on who he was talking about, âhe was kind of a creep.â Kind of was putting it lightly.
Jennifer couldnât help but raise an eyebrow slightly at Edgarâs suddenly cheery tone of voice. She knew him well enough to know that it was forced, and that he was simply trying his best to make it less awkward, but she just couldnât forget what had happened between them. As hard as sheâd tried, the memories still lingered, and the hurt was still there for her. Nodding, she lifted her head slightly, but still couldnât look him in the eyes. âYeah, I graduated pretty recently. Iâm working in an animal clinic not far from here,â she said, gesturing down at her fur covered work clothes. Then, his next statement caught her off guard, and she finally made eye contact. âI- No, I hadnât heard. Iâm sorry,â she said slowly, her voice full of sincerity as she gave him a sad smile. âHe was a sweet man,â she added quietly. She wasnât sure how this news had escaped her, but then again, sheâd done her best to avoid him and anything to do with him, really. Part of her wanted to reach out and hug him, but she pushed her hands into her pockets instead. âIâm sorry,â she said again, knowing how it felt to lose someone so close to you.
âCongrats, thatâs amazing... guess youâre living your dream, huh?â The words felt fake, no matter how much he meant them, how much he knew it meant to her, how proud he was of her, it still felt like false niceties. Like if he really cared, he could have done more, known more about her life. He didnât know why he mentioned his Gramps. Maybe because it was weird for her to not know the biggest change in his life after everything that happened between them. âItâs okay,â it wasnât, but he brushed off her apologies, returning his sad smile with one of his own, âhe liked you a lot.â His Gramps loved everyone, easily, but people who made his grandson happy the most. Another long pause filled the distance between them, leaving Ed floundering for something to say, something to make what was suffocating silence easier. âWe should hang out, properly, sometime soon if ya want...â a beat, before Ed opened his stupid mouth again, âI donât really know how we drifted so far apart.â

Maybe heâd only watched Celeste perform once or twice, but she was quickly becoming one of his favourite sides of Orion. Ed sat in the middle of the room, eyes focused on Celeste as she performed in front of the crowd of festival-goers. With helping out with the gigs, and his recent run in with his ex-girlfriend, the stress had been building lately, but every time she glanced at him during the number, Edgar barely tried to supress his grin. Celeste was breath-taking, the whole room knew it. However, the grin faltered each time a particularly touchy customerâs hands lingered too long on Celeste, making small comments Ed couldnât quite hear. From his table, unease started to build while Ed watched the man like a hawk for any sign of trouble. // @orionboydâÂ
Jennifer kept her gaze locked on her feet, as if it was the most interesting sight sheâd ever seen. Sheâd spent so long managing to avoid this reunion, always staying away from anywhere that Edgar might be, but she was so exhausted from her day that she hadnât even thought about it. Typical. Finally, as he spoke, she wrenched her eyes from the floor and looked at him. It felt like a punch in the stomach, seeing his face again after such a long time. She wasnât sure if that was just the pain from the break up or lingering feelings, but she pushed that train of thought away immediately. Watching as he fumbled for his phone, she cleared her throat lightly. âI uh- yeah. Iâm good,â she said with a small nod, trying to act as nonchalant as possible, but knowing that her face was betraying her calm and collected tone of voice. âHow about you?â she asked, shuffling on her feet and picking at a loose thread on her sleeve, not wanting to look him in the eyes.Â
.
Why wouldnât she look at him? It seemed everything in her vicinity was more interesting than him, that she couldnât even bare to look Edgar in his eyes. Did the hurt run that deep? There was once a time when he and Jen had been inseparable, but now here they were, miles of distance between them. âThatâs great!â He tried to sound cheery, the clip of awkward still in his voice, making everything sound uncomfortably fake, âyou still doinâ that vet thing? You mustâve graduated by now, right?â if Jen couldnât look a him, Ed would try his damned best to be warm towards her, to bridge the divide, âyeah, Iâve been really good actually, uh, doing gigs, running my grampsâ storeâŚâ false-cheeriness turned into something sadder as he remembered his grandfather, who Edgar had dropped out of college to work for, âhe passed away just over a year ago... I dunno if you heard.â
