Well, our second flight this evening was also cancelled. At least we got some skiing in as a consolation prize, and the Kootenay Coldsmoke sure lived up to expectations.

My uncle was kind enough to lend @mikedepaoli and I his snowmobiles and lead us along 50km of snowed over logging roads to reach the shack. Before leaving us to return to work for a few days, he smoked a cigar, tried to open a beer that he had found in the cabin that was frozen solid, and turned to us to say : "I'll leave you to your solace - see you in a few days!". He along with our father will be joining us later in the week. Until then I'm immensely excited to be spending a wintery week here - a place that's increasingly becoming more important to us.

Beyond excited to travel from one corner of this beautiful province to the other with my skis in tow. Unless Air Canada decides to lose those. But hey - they're welcome to take my 8 year old ski boots that are falling apart. #insuranceclaimstobysomedynafits

@kylekirke breaking trail like a boss in some seriously deep coastal cement - our own little women's march of sorts. Although I didn't attend the gathering in Vancouver my thoughts go out to all those who participated not just in the US and Canada but around the world.

There's a person in there I promise 😉

MONDAYS // the start of the week can sometimes feel like you’re trying to jam your feet into frozen ski boots. It sucks in the moment – but once you get them warmed up a bit and the momentum going, the rest of the day and week is a breeze, and what lays ahead can even be exciting. Go crush your Monday!

OPEN SPACE // Happy National Ski Day! Hope you got out there and made some soul turns wherever you are.

COLD SMOKE // We arrived at the hut, dropped our overnight gear and eagerly hiked into the alpine to ski some incredible snow. We got back to the hut in the evening to find that there was no firewood leftover from the last visitors and forecasted temperatures of -25C. Armed with only a hand hatchet, we went to work hand logging a few, thigh sized trees (they were already dead!) and splitting them to use as firewood. Cutting, splitting and dragging trees through deep snow back to the cabin after a day of skiing was not easy, and to top it off we had an immensely hard time trying to light the wet firewood. Thankfully, we managed to get it lit and spend the night only shivering a little bit. Much of our trip was spent remarking over how difficult life must've been for colonialists to Canada and the US. We're pretty soft now with our properly insulated houses, on demand hot water, and electric heating. // Needless to say, after our trip we paid a visit to the community pool and properly thawed out in the hottub.
