Spamton and Dess are both characters who start off fine (if not a little troubled) before mysteriously going missing, presumably due to forces beyond them. Dess and Spamton are both not mentioned outside of those close to them, likely because they're viewed as a taboo subject. Throughout the entirety of the game, outside of Pizzapants and the Dreemurr and Holiday families, no one ever mentions Dess. Meanwhile, Asriel is mentioned multiple times by several monsters in Hometown. Spamton is similar; he’s only ever mentioned by Tenna, while the other Darkners in TV World and Cyber City seem to avoid talking about him entirely.

Spamton and Dess’s rooms are also both preserved in the same state they were the day they went missing.

(these are the only times in the game the word "unplugged" is used!) Dess’s room is kept preserved that way due to Carol, who has an obsession with keeping all her loved ones close and static, as shown by her preserving snowflakes against Noelle’s wishes:

Carol's obsession with keeping her loved ones close seems to only really drive them away. Noelle feels detached from her due to her attitude, and grows a desire to break free of control and do what she desires to. A desire which grows much deeper in the weird route. Tenna is similarly shown to care a lot about keeping those he cares about close to him, to a degree that harms them and ultimately pushes them away. He pressures Spamton to write a contract knowing something bad would happen, partly because he wanted them to be together forever, he keeps the Z-rank room and the mailroom preserved even years after Spamton’s disappearance, he traps the fun gang in gacha balls in order to keep them playing his games, and he even puts a sleeping Toriel in a gacha ball in snow. In Chapter 5, it’s revealed Asgore feels guilt about his involvement in Dess’ disappearance and pushes everyone away because of it:

In the same exact chapter, Tenna, who’s similar to Asgore in several ways (hangs on to the past, attempts to be a parental figure to Kris) expresses how guilty he feels about Spamton’s disappearance, and how he pushes others away because he's hung up on it:

(It’s also worth noting that Dess’s disappearance and Spamton’s disappearance are directly linked in the story. The Dreemurr and Holiday families grow apart and stop watching TV when Dess goes missing, which is what prompts Tenna to become afraid of being thrown away and make Spamton sign the contract.)

Noelle also exemplifies how Tenna goes into denial about Spamton’s disappearance. In Chapter 5 of the Weird route, Noelle says this:

She makes sure to specify that Dess left; not disappeared, not went missing, left. even though every previous discussion of Dess led us to believe she went missing due to something outside of her control. This is similar to Tenna claiming that Spamton abandoned him in the sword route ending segment, even though we know Spamton didn’t choose to leave and was instead forced to due to his benefactor.

Noelle also explains that she’s struggled with dissociation since Dess left, which is strikingly similar to Tenna saying that nothing has felt real to him since Spamton left:

This feels even more intentional when considering some of Noelle and Tenna’s other similarities, such as their tendency to hang on to the past, their lack of courage to break free from the systems keeping their lives stale despite a clear desire to do so, how they define themselves by others rather than their own selves, and how they both care about Pipis. Noelle is even sad when you give Tenna away to Mettaton in Chapter 5.

The crowd roared in confused enthusiasm as Tenna gave a gracious flurry of low-FPS bows, pausing only for the occasional stink-nose at his audience plants who weren’t throwing enough 3D roses.

Eventually, the room fell silent. It was Senshi’s turn to speak.

He puffed out his chest, took a long, sweeping look over the audience… and shook his head.

“I can see not all of you are eating properly.”

The crowd murmured with embarrassment.

“I don’t know who needs to hear this, but it’s time to take the turkey out of your icebox. I have seen the ingenious technology with which your people store food... and I have also seen the waste which results from such convenience.

“The food you take had a life. Beasts grew fat on the grass of the field, plants grew from the sun’s rays, and mushrooms grew from minerals in the cracks of caves. And yet, it sits in your iceboxes, collecting moisture until it perishes.

“Eat what is given to you. Because its life will make you stronger, too.”

Without another word, Senshi left his podium and stepped away from the stage. The crowd murmured in confusion. “Is he really like that?” somebody said. “I only remember reblogging the photosets of him tripping and showing ass.”

Back in the Green Room, Tenna wrung his antennas nervously.

“Y-y-you think they liked me!? They HAD to!! I mean, I don’t know what Asgore was thinking, getting that weird haircut and running that food waste campaign, but… YOU thought I did good, didn’t you, Kris?”

Laios nodded aggressively, a streak of blue face paint peeling from his forehead.

“You did AMAZING, Tenna! By the way, now that we’ve seen all your insider campaign secrets, do you have any more videos of Susie? Especially her tail... If I could get a look at that, I could finally tell if she’s a dinosaur or --”

THWACK. Fake antlers butted Laios’s head.

“LAIOS?? Weren’t we dressed up to help SENSHI???” Marcille hissed, gesturing awkwardly with her hooves.

Suddenly, Tenna turned to the two adventurers.

“Hey, WAIT a second. SOMETHING’s not right here...”

Laios and Marcille held their breath.

“Where the heck are my POINTS!?”

Just then, the door opened. Chilchuck took one step into the room, whistling and holding a large bag.

Everyone turned to him.

Chilchuck paused, took a step backwards, and closed the door.

“CHILCHUCK!!!” yelled Tenna.

“How come Chilchuck got to stay Chilchuck!?” yelled Marcille at the same time.

Early on, his style is much more of a "I'm strong and can do everything right and make this world perfect, and it'll end anyway, so you heroes can kindly just leave." That's what he wants. He doesn't seem interested in making the heroes grow, especially being mentor-like to Ralsei like how he becomes later. If anything, he reads as kinda spiteful, and I wouldn't be surprised if it's for reasons similar to the ones that Ralsei holds against him. Their aggression, at least in my view, reads as a two-way street; Ralsei has a plan that dehumanizes him that he hates and doesn't acknowledge themself in the process, which kinda goes against everything Flowery stands for, and vice versa Flowery's carefree attitude, demeaning behavior, and utter lack of plan or interest in his own perpetuity pisses Ralsei the hell off. I don't see Flowery-as-mentor or Flowery-as-rival... yet.

When Flowery realizes that the heroes are not backing off to let him and the Flowers watch the sunset (they are rather literally sunsetting, which is all sorts of depressing when you stop to think about it), though, he can't just be an asshole anymore if he wants to follow his own code. He has to acknowledge them, and regards them more as worthy opponents when they ignore his first warning and come back despite getting Asgore to push them out of the Dark World. Nobody is leaving this situation be, and it's here that Flowery gets to fully self-actualize. He gets more scenes where we see and hear about how he helps others, and we get the absolute smoking gun of that drink voucher scene where he drops his demeanor and genuinely just talks to Ralsei about their process, only jabbing at the inconsistencies and making them come into conflict with their own cognitive dissonance. He's having to live up to his own standard of humanization, and does so through mentorship.

And then, once the Heroes have gone past all the prior obstacles, it's time to be the rival. He stresses his "power of friendship" stuff, emphasizes himself as just as much of a hero, if not moreso than they are. His argument about the fountains, logically speaking, is utter bullshit, but he knows that and still manages to convey a strong rhetorical point. If they really want to shut him down with logic, they're okay giving up the humanity of others for sake of an end they don't desire. He himself cannot be saved, no matter what happens, but the party has never been able to deny the humanity of others no matter what they believe about themselves, and he forces them to confront that truth in a way that makes them question their own processes. This is his finest work, and what makes him a truly effective villain.

We've dealt with assholes, we've dealt with the selfish, we've dealt with seemingly unstoppable forces, we've dealt with those who are devoid of conscious, but we haven't dealt with someone like him in his final form. He's an excellent progression in the story's stakes precisely because he is also a layered, flawed character who can be selfish, rude, and narcissistic, and yet someone who can still grow to be a mentor and well-meaning rival despite that growth amounting to theoretically nothing.
