“Worth a shot.”

The only problem with dating John is if you guys break up, you know things won’t be the same again. It’ll be awkward and miserable. You’d want your best friend back. 

"Well, alright then!"

There was the matter of break up, but you didn't want to think about that, not when you'd just got together, like, five whole seconds ago. So you push that out of your mind and stand there, awkwardly.

You tilt your head a little bit and step towards him again.

“And if you do, I’m fine with that. Extremely fine with it.”

"Well, I dunno, if you want.."

Your brother tends to be unpredictable, and he refuses to put a lock on your door. What’s the use, anyways? He’d find a way to unlock it.

You see the confusion in his face. You two need to talk about it. It can’t just remain as an unspoken sort of thing.

You wonder why he wouldn't have a lock, but you won't bother asking.

There's a little awkwardness about you, stuffing your hands in your pockets and twisting your mouth a little.

"I figured it just meant we were dating."

“I’m okay, I guess.”

You bite your lip and shove your hands in your pockets, looking up a little bit.

“Bored, tired, same as always. Staying away from my psycho naked brother that insists on walking in on me when I’m changing.”

You raise a brow and fix your sight on him.

You smile a little at him, because you'd never understood how he and his brother acted. They were strange, and you never knew what to expect when you went to their place.

Dave mentions talking about 'the other day' and you're confused for a moment, and you squint as you try to register what it means, but then it hits you-

“How’ve you been, kid?”

You’re 99.5% sure he’s used to you calling him kid. Mainly because he’s younger than you buy a couple of months and you take advantage of it.

You roll up the sleeves on your shirt half-way up your arms and push your glasses up to your hair. You’re used to it by now, not wearing your glasses. It’s easier to see him at such a late hour without the tint of the lenses darkening his face.

Best friend or not, you'd drop that bitch to his knees if you had the chance. Except he'd grind your face into a pile of rocks after, but it'd be worth it.

You watch as he rolls his sleeves up and adjusts his glasses, head tilted a little while you fix the mess he made of your hair.

You knock on the door, and Jade answers. Great, just what you need. She immediately starts swarming you with questions, talking a mile a minute. 

“Why do you hate me so much?”

“Stop being a jerk!”

But you don’t give a shit, really, and you push past her. You guess she figures out what you’re doing. She points to the entrance to the back yard and shrugs.

You open the door and shut it behind you, quietly so he doesn’t hear you.

Too excitedly, as you get caught in it and nearly trip, close to landing on your face. But you catch yourself, duh, you always do.

You brush the dust and grass off your knees and look at him, smile fading as you clear your throat and attempt to act like you were composed.

You don’t even know if John wants to see you right now. You never said you’d give him much of a choice, though.

It’s not so much of the fact that John might not want to see you. It’s more of you not wanting to see him. No, it’d be too awkward and you wouldn’t know what to do! Maybe he’d get pissed off at you if you brought the other day up.

You find yourself walking the tell-tale route to John’s house. You’d walked there so many times before without even thinking about it— without caring. But now it’s different. 

You’re now at the residence of John Egbert

In your hands is your iPod, your headphones securely nestled in your ears, and some kind of farming game on because fuck off, you like those games. You've got almost a dozen of them on there and you play all of them, and you like to tell yourself that at least you're dedicated to something.

Thinking back, you should've worn a jacket- that's always your problem, wearing your jacket when it's warm and not when it's cold- but you can't be bothered to get up.
