Hi, love your account! This is a random question but I was wondering why different Phantoms wear their ring on different hands? RAH Ramin has it on his left hand, Killian on his right - just curious if one way is more common than the other?
I was about to blame Michael Crawford... Being left-handed, the quill at the organ was placed on the left side, and even if most Phantoms to follow him might have been right-handed the quill is still on the left side. The ring could have been a similar feature, but when I double-checked with photos he wears the ring on the right hand side - like here, in an original promo photo:
So moonwalking away from my initial thought I guess it's simply up to the actor? Both sides seems to be just as common; in the West End production alone they seem to switch back and forth. The benefit of wearing it on the left hand is that it comes well into view in the MOTN pose, but symbolically it kinda follows the mask when worn on the right hand. Both makes sense to me :)
Whatever the case, many Phantoms seems to stick to whatever they were first taught when going from one production to another. The ring appears on the left hand in almost all photos of Peter Karrie, be it in the UK or Canada. Same for Marcus Lovett on Broadway and in West End, and Ian Jon Bough in Stuttgart and in the World Tour:
On the other hand, Tomas Ambt Kofod started out wearing the ring on the right side when understudying the role of the Phantom in 2009, though the principals wore it on the left side. When Kofod became principal in 2018, he wore the ring on the left side - buuuuut his alternate John Martin Bengtsson wore it on the right side. So there's little consistency even within a production.
