I introduced myself to a new plant today whilst trapping through a tidal marsh. Salicornia sp. but probably bigelovii. The pickleweed, glasswort, or saltwort. It is an herbaceous annual that is edible but also used in phytoremediation of soils contaminated with selenium, is a candidate for biofuel due to a high concentration of linoleum acid, can supplement livestock feed and serve as a cooking oil. The plant is considered a hygrohalophyte. Hygro- because it can withstand being submerged in water, halo- indicating that it grows in saltwater laden soils, and -phyte because it is a plant.
